The name "Waxahachie" was given to it by General Sam Houston in 1836 when he named it for his friend General John Waxman on the Brazos River. The first post office in Waxahachie was established on November 24, 1876, and remained open until it closed on May 6, 1902. The first store in Waxahachie was The Girdler's Store which opened on September 7, 1886. Waco Tires Company opened its doors July 1, 1907 and remains one of the town's most prominent businesses to this day. In 1945, the local paper company became Texarkana Newspapers Incorporated or TPX (Texarkana Press Exchange). TPX merged with Hearst Corporation in 1970 to form Hearst Corporation Texas Newspaper Group orHouston Chronicle plc (HCAG). HCAG continued to operate as an independently owned publishing company until it was acquired by Dow Jones Newswire in 2007. In January 2009, HCAG announced plans to close 10 newspapers across six states due to budget cuts that affected all media companies nationwide. This prompted a boycott by some papers' employees who walked out of their jobs effective February 2nd 2009 after refusing to accept any offers for job reductions from HCAG management

Waxahachie, Texas is a town in Dallas County, Texas, United States. The population was 3,824 at the 2010 census. Waxahachie was founded on December 24, 1881 by white men following the Santa Anna Expedition. It became a city on November 3, 1907. On January 1, 1915 Waxahachie merged with Arlington to form the Dallas-Arlington metropolitan area. The first settler in what is now Waxahachie was James Wetherbee who arrived in 1881 and built a cabin on Big Creek about 12 miles west of present day Waxahachie. In 1882 Wetherbee married Sarah Ann Clements (1848-1914), sister of Major General Edwin Mifflin Clements (1838-1920). They had two children: James A., born in 1883 and Sarah B., born in 1886. In 1889 Jno Hays moved from Missouri to Surveyor John Pemberton's ranch near Fort Worth to survey for cattle drives north of Dallas and he named his new land "Waxahachie". He arrived July 5th of that year and naming his company the "Waxahachie Cowboys" after his favorite cowboys from cowboy movies which he enjoyed watching as a boy. The first post office in Waxahachie was established on December 24th of that year by Jno Hays with mail delivered daily from Fort Worth to his ranch east of town via stagecoaches. The only service available until 1901 when an interurban line began running betweenDallas and Arlington providing passenger service between those cities each morning at 7am local time until 4pm when it stopped operations due to high traffic levels during prohibition years In 1895 George Fenton opened up an grocery store next door to the old courthouse across from current day Texaco gas station before eventually becoming known as one of Dallas County's largest retailers . By 1897 there were six grocery stores scattered around town with Geo Fenton owning four including one located just outside downtown on what is now Seventh Street North . During this time also Harry Dillard opened up his own general store about three blocks away from where Geo Fenton lived before moving into larger business later that decade . In 1901 Sam Houston National Memorial Park was dedicated nearby making waxahacha its namesake park giving it much needed development money which helped increase its population by thirty percent over the next few years .
