Webster is a small town in Gregg County, Texas, United States. It was founded in 1879 by John Webster and his wife Rebecca. The population was 1,057 at the 2010 census. The town is located on the Arkansas River and is named for John Webster's father-in-law, Elias Boudinot. The river forms the border of the town with neighboring Mckinney and Round Rock. Webster is situated within Gregg County's eastern border. John Webster built a log cabin in what is now Webstertown in 1879. He soon realized that he needed to provide a better lifestyle for his people than he had experienced back home in Missouri. So he started to build himself a house and start to furnish it with materials from around the area. In time, other early settlers arrived in Webster and started businesses such as a blacksmith shop, grocery store, post office, doctor's office and more! All these businesses were essential during those early days when there were no roads or phone service! In 1907, General James Hogg ordered all Texas troops out of Texas soWebster became an important stop on military supplies being sent downriver across the state line to Fort Worth (now Dallas). During World War I, local farmers produced high quality munitions which made Webster one of the most prolific arms producers in Texas! In 1941, President Franklin D Roosevelt visitedWebster while on tour through Texas; this event helped jumpstart economic development within Webster during World War II! The post office was closed down by mail carrier lawsuit but reopened by Citizens for Open Door Post Office after court settlement in 1987; this event restored some much needed community spirit at Webster! In 2006-2007 voters passed an ordinance requiring all new buildings over 10 feet tall be built with metal frames or concrete blockades; this ordinance preserved many historic features of our town including its Mission Revival style architecture!! Webster has always been known for its delicious cornmeal mush called "Pecan Pie". This dish has been served up since 1902 when Mrs. Alice Goodspeed first opened her pie restaurant hereabouts!
