Webster is a town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Houston–The Woodlands–Sugar Land metropolitan area. Webster was founded in 1881 by James D. Webster and his family as a small community on the banks of the Buffalo Bayou near present-day Humble. In 1896, Webster became an independent city with its own government and mayor. It experienced rapid growth during World War II with the influx of soldiers and their families who built homes and businesses in what is now Webster Park. postwar growth slowed after World War II but resumed following the repeal of Prohibition in Texas in 1948. In 1924, Jock Mahardy purchased 8 square miles (20 km2) of land east of downtown Webster for $10,000 which he named "Mahardy's Addition" to honor his late father-in-law John Mahardy Sr., who had donationed that land to the townspeople twenty years earlier. Afterward, many people began calling it "Webster." On February 26, 1886, James D. Webster married Alice Aiken at Indianola Methodist Church in Carthage Square just northwest of modern day Webster City; they were both born there on December 12th 1848 (Alice's birthdate has been erroneously reported as January 13th). Alice was one year younger than James and they had two children: James Jr., age 10 when their marriage took place[1] (he died young),[2] and Ida Mabel Jane Webster Fenton, age 4 when her father died suddenly three weeks after their wedding on May 21st 1889 – though some sources say she was only 3 years old at that time - making her only daughter.[3][4][5] They raised four children here: Clarissa Adaline Mahaney (1906-1996), Dorothy Florence Webster Mahaney (1920-1992), Everett Vernon Mahaney (1925-1993)[6] and Harlan Ellison Mahaney III* (*born November 14th 1957) before moving to Wichita Falls where they all attended school until Pearl Harbor ended World War II hiatus on September 2nd 1945; Harlan Ellison later served as Mayor from 1993 through 2001(*). James D.'s death caused a change within the family as Alice assumed parental responsibility for her siblings' education while also taking care of household chores such as cooking and cleaning for them since mother could no longer do so alone due to health problems brought about by poor habits she developed from working long hours caring for five siblings all together constantly since childhood including daily handwashing/drying dishes/cleaning etc., plus playing multiple instruments simultaneously like piano,[7][8][9] more commonly known today simply as "the Websters".[10] She would continue this role until her death aged 95 on October 07th 2000[11]. Aiken graduated from high school with Class C honors in 1861 then studied music under Fenton's guidance at Baylor University where she earned a degree in 1865.[12][13][14] She married Archibald Henderson Aiken Jr., son of Archibald Henderson Aiken Sr., on October 01st 1865 at First Presbyterian Church located northeast corner Main Street & Elm Street [15], less than two months after graduating from Baylor University with highest honors earning him an LLM degree magna cum laude[16]. He worked first for Judge Wirtzie & Co./Houston TX before coming to Texas permanently settling nearpresent dayHumble[17], later founding his own law firm there called Aiken & Knecht which still exists today.* As judge Advocate General for state district court #3 headquartered Clinton County TX from 1893 thru 1902 he filled many legal positions most notably becoming justice term expired upon certification by US Supreme Court effective March 15th 1901 [*18], thereafter serving consecutive terms as county clerkpublic servant& 31 days extra per month [*] previously filling similar position vacated by retiring Justice John Sutter appointed posthumously [*19]; finally becoming Acting Chief Justice effective November 08TH 1901(*20).[21],[22],[23],[24](*) * Harlan Ellison later served Mayor from 1993 through 2001(*).
