West University Place is a city in Dallas, Texas. It was the original seat of government for Dallas County. The city was founded by John Addison west of the Trinity River on land belonging to Sam Houston and his heirs in 1836. In 1861, it became the capital of Texas as the result of the Lone Star State's secession from United States rule. The city has grown rapidly since its incorporation as a municipality in 1959, becoming one of Dallas' most populous neighborhoods with over 150,000 residents. The earliest inhabitants of what is now West University Place were two groups who had immigrated from Ireland: the O'Meara family and the Gray family. In 1836, John Addison purchased 640 acres (250 hectares) along streams that flow into downtown Dallas from what is now UptownDallas for $7 per acre ($27 per hectare). This property would eventually become West University Place. Addison named his new settlement after himself and fellow British-born settler James Hogg, who had come to Texas in 1835 to purchase land east of San Antonio. Two years later, on November 3rd, 1837, Hogg submitted a plat to local officials proposing that Baylor College be established at West University Place; this request was granted on December 8th. After Baylor College's establishment at West University Place in 1840 under George Warton's leadership, additional colleges and universities soon followed suit including Rice University (1845), Southern Methodist University (1849), New Mexico Territory School of Mines and Metallurgy (1850), Prairie View A&M Institute (1855), Denton Seminary (1859), and Transylvania Normal School (1861). In 1860, when Texas seceded from United States rule following the American Civil War,[1] Austin became its new capital.[2] In order for Austin to maintain its role as capital during Reconstruction – which ended more than two decades afterTexas annexation – City Council voted to annex portions of Collin County including parts of present day East Dallas/UptownHouston[3][4] on October 25th 1865.[5][6] On January 1st 1870[7], Austin annexed all but 6 square miles (~20 km2) around Oak Cliff which remained unincorporated until 1961 when it joined annexation proceedings into City limits.[8][9] As part of this processOak Cliff unsuccessfully applied for annexation several times before finally accepting it upon passage by City Council on July 21st 1957 with an enrollment total below 10 students! West University Place, Texas is a small town located in the Panhandle of Texas. It was first settled by European Americans in the 1840s and it became a center for education and culture. The town was named after West Point, New York, where American general George Washington served as commander during the Revolutionary War. The town has since grown to include a population of over 2,000 residents. The town’s history began with the founding of West University Place Academy in 1845. This academy was designed to provide children with an education that would prepare them for careers in agriculture or industry. The academy closed in 1870 but its legacy lives on to this day as the only high school in West University Place. In addition to its educational services, West University Place also played an important role during the Civil War. The town was home to many of the Union army’s primary camps and hospitals. In 1861, West University Place became one of two settlements within Confederate territory when Union General James Longstreet arrived in Texas. The post-war years were difficult for West University Place. However, it continued to grow due to its location within easy reach of Houston and other major cities. In 1971, WestUniversityPlace made national headlines when it joined forces with neighboring towns around San Marcos and Friendswood to form what is now known as TX Tech Regional Airport (LFMK). This airport has helped define bothWestUniversityPlace’s economy and its regionally prominent status quo since its establishment.
West University Place in downtown Dallas is one of the oldest neighborhoods in the city. It was developed from land that was part of the Baylor University campus. The area now known as West University Place was originally mostly agricultural, and there were few buildings other than barns and churches until the early 1900s. However, with the growth of Baylor University, development began to take hold in this area and by 1930, some homes had been built on what is now West University Place. By World War II, many businesses had been established in this area, and it became a commercial center for Dallas. After the war ended, however, many businesses closed down or moved out of Dallas because of changes in economic conditions. Despite these changes, West University Place continued to be an important residential neighborhood for families throughout the 1970s and 1980s. In recent years, however, gentrification has begun to occur in this neighborhood due to growing demand for high-end real estate listings here.
