Bountiful, Utah is a small town in Iron County, Utah that was first settled in the mid-19th century. The name Bountiful comes from the word "bounty," meaning "a piece of land or goods." The town was founded on the east side of the Salt Lake Valley and was known as a trading post between pioneers and Native Americans. In 1847, Brigham Young organized the LDS (Latter Day Saints) Church in what is now Bountiful. Early settlers were subsistence farmers who raised chickens, pigs, cows and horses for their own needs and sold their produce to other ranchers and travelers along the Great Salt Lake Valley. The growth of agriculture led to an increase in population in Bountiful over time and by 1900 it had reached 200 residents. That same year, Mormon missionaries arrived in Bountiful to start proselytizing for Jesus Christ. By 1912, construction began on what would become Brigham Young University (BYU). Although initially opposed by some members of the LDS Church hierarchy because it would promote secular education among its students, BYU eventually became one of Mormonism's most successful institutions. In 1976, BYU merged with Utah State University to form Utah State University–Main Campus (later renamed Utah State University–Salt Lake City). Today, Brigham Young University remains one of America's leading religious universities with undergraduate enrollment totaling more than 50,000 students; university graduate programs total over 30 thousand; minors account for almost half a million additional students; BYU Women’s Center has been awarded national status as a “ vital resource for gender parity”; and major sport teams dominate college athletics across all sports conferences.
