In 1871, Highland was founded by James W. Weldon and his wife, Mollie. The town was named in honor of the high mountain range that surrounded it on three sides. Today, Highland is a small community located in Uintah County, Utah, about 30 miles east of Salt Lake City. Highland began as a farming community with just a few hundred residents. By 1919, when the population had grown to over 1,000 people, Highland had become an important junction for Route 66 and other highways running through central Utah. The post office at Highland originally served only those living in the town itself; later it became an extension of the larger local government. The Weldomans residence on Main Street still stands as one of the most beautiful examples of period architecture in Uintah County. It was built in 1907-08 as part of a downtown development that included several other residences and a gymnasium/football field. Today's structure is one of several surviving buildings from that era which have been preserved and used as tourist attractions in Highlands since the early 21st century. During World War II, Highland played host to numerous military installations including Camp David (later known as Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson), which is now called Dahlgren Air Force Base northeast of neighboring Rapid City. In addition to its wartime importance, Highland also saw significant development during the late 19th century due to increased immigration from Canada and Mexico following Manifest Destiny nationalism during the mid-19th century United States expansion into new territory west of Mexico City called Arizona Territory (the region now comprising southern Utah). As such, much Scottish culture infiltrated this newly formed American society during this time period; some interesting artifacts associated with this period include whisky bottles dating back to 1892 found at Dahlgren AFB today! Today's economy largely revolves around tourism; however there are some businesses involved in manufacturing such as fabricating metal products and plastics; sales within Uintah County have increased significantly over recent years due to opportunities available outside Colorado Springs where many jobs were lost during economic recession throughout 2013-14
The first white settlers in Highland, Utah were George and Martha Hill who arrived in 1847. They founded the town on a parcel of land that was donated to them by the Salt Lake Valley Company. The HIllords were pioneers and are credited with being the first to plant cotton in the area. In 1870, John Pritchett came to Highland and started a flour mill. He also ranched and growt corn, wheat, potatoes, hay, and tomatoes. The town continued to grow until it had a population of 2,000 people in 1961.
