Layington is a town in Wasatch County, Utah, United States. The population was 1,824 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Ogden–Clearfield, UT Metropolitan Statistical Area. Layton was founded in 1847 by John A. Layton and others as a station on the Lewis and Clark Expedition as part of their survey of the Great Salt Lake Valley.[2] The name comes from an early Mormon leader, Brigham Young. The town was first settled by Mormons after they left Nauvoo Illinois in 1846 to escape religious persecution there. They built their first store here in 1847 and laid out streets and homes around it in 1849. In 1860, Layton became a city with its own government under Mayor George Waddell. In 1870, layon incorporated as a townsite with a total population of 2,200 people;[3] however this number only increased with annexations until it reached 4,000 when it annexed Clearwater[4] in 1912. By 1920 the population had grown to 10,000,[5] but World War II intervened and eliminated most growth; only 5% of the population served in military during that time because so much manufacturing took place inland away fromettable soil and natural resources. In 2002 Layton re-incorporated as an unincorporated community following elections held there for that purpose.[6][7][8][9][10] As recently as 2010 about 60% of all residents lived within unincorporated communities located outside city limits while 20% resided within city limits themselves (the rest living either partially or wholly within cities). Today layon has become one stop on Route 12 between Ogden and Provo which also means more opportunities for shopping; however some residents still find value downtown despite its distance from many services typical to modern cities like banks, groceries etc.; While annexation has closed off much downtown land to development over recent years new businesses have started up including several restaurants along Main Street which offers amazing views across heavily populated areas of Grant Park towards Downtown Ogden
