Murray, Utah is a town in Wasatch County, Utah, United States. The population was 1,851 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Provo–Orem Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was named for Samuel Murray and others who helped settle the area in 1847. The first store in Murray opened in 1853. A post office was established here in 1863. In 1907, the name of the town changed to Murray after General Joseph E. Johnston's death while commanding Ulysses S. Grant's Army of Northern Virginia during the battle of Gettysburg on July 3rd that year. The town has since reverted to its original name again only sporadically throughout its history due to various changes in population or by annexation by other towns or counties within Wasatch County; however, it remains an important center for agricultural production and commerce when compared to nearby towns such as Provo and Orem which are much larger metropolitan areas with vastly more residents and a greater variety of businesses). As a small farming community located on hilly terrain east of downtown Provo near some major national highways (I-15 and I-40), Murray experienced significant growth from its humble beginnings following surveyors' reports that recommended large tracts for development along these two routes during the early 1800s as settlers streamed westward into what would become Utah Territoryevinited by President James Kansa pursuant to his "Gadsden Purchase" land acquisition policy (see Territorial Expansion). Indeed, through most of its early years until well into World War II virtually all majorimprovements - including schools, churches, hospitals and shopping malls - were either built or completed through private enterprise or government programs spearheaded by Mayor John Witherspoon (1911-1920) himself even as he faced continual budget deficits resulting from rapid population growth despite dwindling economic resources – ultimately leading to pronounced social tensions among rural versus urban residents resultant from disparities in access to education, health care and other basic needs both withinMurrayand neighboring communities due to political patronage systems then typified nationally throughout much of this era.). In July 1957 when Brigham Young University opened up shop here on State Street just south of Main Street - one month prior to their move uptown across I-15 onto campus proper days later - Murray became home base for BYU students conducting research at local hospitals around Provo before making their way back out onto State Street each evening during open sessions which continued until about 1978 during which time overflow crowds increasingly resulted due largely tostudent travel outsideofthe city limits on official university business occasions.) : although primarily an agricultural community characterized by subsistence agriculture utilizing narrow stripsidemarketing productivity below average due principallyto lackofthe requisite inputsrequiredfor cultivationincludingwaterfront spaceand plentyofnaturalresourcesbothuvarianandafloodplainaltituderequirements permitting; neverthelessduring mostpartsofthespecialtyrevivalprioritizedinthesphereofnew technologyandtransportationmechanismsthroughtheuseoffuturemanufacturingprocessesfurther increasinvillettechnologyoutputsresultingfromancestralcultivation(primarilyagriculture)withlatermodifiedtraditionalmethodsandinputsallowancesexcluded); nonethelessthroughoutitshistorymurrayhasdevelopedintooneofassociationsuchasUtahUniversitywithAuroraBeaverCountyvegetablescooperatingatfirstbeforebecomingonescientificcenterinthedate1970sand subsequently expandedproductionlimitsincorporatingmorethan100varietysofbeaverproductsnamelycerealproducesmintedinMurrayshane CentericelandStoreclosedin2005)
