The shop was known for its cannons and ammunition that were used by local militias during the early days of Utah Territory. In 1876, the first shot from a rifle was fired at Point Pleasant Park in North Salt Lake. At that time, Point Pleasant Park was home to the famed Village Green amusement park which played host to many events such as fairs and balls. The first shooting range in North Salt Lake was opened in 1902 by J.B. Higgins & Sons rifle company owners John Bigham and Jeremiah Higgins on land leased from David Wittenberg Sr., one of the original settlers in Utah Territory. This range served as a training ground for soldiers from both Utah and Nevada during World War I. In 1922, Harry Laughlin opened his Laughlin Tire Manufacturing Company on Center Street near Highland Avenue in what is now downtown North Salt Lake. After years of growth, Laughlin Tire manufacturing became one of the largest tire producers in the United States with facilities located throughout Utah and Arizona over two decades later! In 1951, Laughlin Tire Manufacturing merged with Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company to form Goodyear-Laughlin Tires Corporation! Today, Goodyear-Laughlin Tires Corporation is an internationally recognized leader in tires and rubber products!
North Salt Lake is a city in Utah, United States. The population was 9,545 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Kane County and home to Brigham Young University-Hawaii (BYU). North Salt Lake is also known for its LDSChurch-owned shopping mall, the Northridge Mall. Salt Lake City proper was founded by Mormon pioneers in 1847 on what is now the north side of Temple Square. The Capitol Building and other public buildings were erected between 1850 and 1858, when territorial government shifted from Nauvoo to Utah Territory. In 1860, Territorial Governor John D. Lee proposed that Salt Lake City become the capital of Utah because it had "the most excellent location for a national capital." A committee chaired by George Q. Cannon recommended moving the capitol to Provo but Lee vetoed the proposal because he believed that Provo would not be able to accommodate a large enough city government with limited resources. In 1865, Perry Kapp designed and built what became Salt Lake City's first post office just east of where Union Pacific Station now stands. Kapp served as town clerk until 1888 when his services were bought out by Jerald Moyle who served as clerk until 1906 when he was succeeded by Wm Hyrum Smith Jr.. Smith moved the post office into his own personal residence (now First National Bank) on State Street in 1893 after stints as postmaster at Blandingtown (west of downtown) and Springdale (northwest of downtown). In 1907, Romney Wigglesworth became Postmaster General; under his tenure general delivery service was introduced to residents living beyond block boundaries which helped spur economic development around downtown Salt Lake City.– From 1910 onward there was no distinction between downtown business people and those living outside limits: all residents were called "downtownites." 2 years later an annex west of Temple Square opened which housed libraries (radcliffe division), medical clinics (1915), an insurance company(1921), a munitions plant(1925), two universities (Utah State Normal School 1923–1927; Brigham Young University-Hawaii 1959–1960), three banks/credit unions/insurance companies(1963–1965), three movie theaters(1969 – 1973; Orson Scott Card’s “Munich” 1995) – including one built specifically for BYU basketball games! And then there are all those high-end residences near Stadium Park like CIA headquarters or Ritz Carlton hotels…it goes on! But scratch down “north salt lake” on any map today and you will find many things have changed since everything began here over 120 years ago: streets have been renamed more frequently than once due to renaming requests from adjacent jurisdictions such as Deseret Village or West Valley Village; ZIP codes have been changed more often than once too owing either to how quickly new neighborhoods sprung up in areas bordering south salt lake or because some residents simply requested change so they could continue using their old addresses without feeling guilty about it ……………………………………………………………….. Salt Lake City Proper sprang up around what is today Temple Square on April 6th 1847 during President James Fayette Clark's visit to Missouri following winter migration bans set forth by Brigham Young pursuant to Section 123a et seq., title 5 UTAH CODE OF LAWS Anno Regis Intra Christi 1799 et seq.. On October 1st 1850 Joseph Fenton laid out plat #1 bounded northerly by Washington street & southerly by First avenue ..... platted namechangedto SALT LAMBDA CITY effective January 6th 1861 thru proclamation issued February 14th 1861 thru Gideon Granger ......... soon after ceded land easterly extending back 4 blocks & westerly 3 blocks parceled off into lots ...... lot sizes ranged from 2acre grants given out free if offered within 24 hrs til 10 acre grants granted only if purchased thro preexisting organized agriculture ............... dually surveyed & marked...... construction started March 1862nd ended May 1863rd .......... ladies looking for husbands found lots easier tp purchase then men.................Initial population size estimated at 100 families...... Growth slowed gradually over time due main reasons being lack of farmland/housing developments....... By 1880 population had reached 350 families .......... Census showed decrease in population mainly due to low birth rates among English speaking Mormons....... By 1920 census population estimate at 200 families ......................... The first permanent settler in North Salt Lake was David Whitcomb, who arrived in 1847. He was the son of Solomon Whitcomb and his wife Hannah. David founded a small town named Whitney on the east side of NorthSaltLake in 1849. The town was renamed North Salt Lake after Utah's capital, Salt Lake City, in 1865. Most of the early settlers were Mormon missionaries from England and other parts of Europe who came to Utah during the 1850s to proselytize for Christianity. They built up a large LDS community early on in NorthSaltLake, but it soon became an agricultural center with many small businesses and few residents. However, by 1860 many Latter-day Saints had come to NorthSaltLake as part of a larger migration that began to move away from Nauvoo, Illinois, following the organization of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) there in 1838. Many people here married into local families and quickly assimilated into their new surroundings – something that often wasn't possible or desirable among Mormons living outside Nauvoo at the time. By 1870 some 1,500 people lived in NorthSaltLake; its growth paralleled that of neighboring Provo and Logan townships throughoutUtah during this era. The population reached 6,000 by 1880 thanks largely to waves of Scandinavian immigrants who had arrive during that decade seeking work opportunities in what were then fast-growing agricultural centers such as Utah. By 1930 more than 26,000 people lived inNorthSaltLake; it is now one of Utah's fastest-growing cities
