Ogden, Utah is a city in Kane County, Utah, United States. It was founded in 1847 by George W. Ogden and named for him. The population of the city was 6,477 as of the 2010 census. The Promontory Mountains form part of the boundaries of Ogden to the east and west while Davis City forms the limits to the north and south. The first people who set foot on what is now Ogden soil were two groups of men known as The Hennepin band andbuffalo hunters from Minnesota. These early settlers were led by Captain John A. Fetterman who arrived in 1847 with his party from Detroit, Michigan via Stagecoach Pass through Nebraska Territory on their way to Cedar Valley near present-day Salt Lake City. They camped at an area near present-day West Monroe Street and South Temple Street before moving on to claim land along what is now North Temple Creek which they called Buffalo Park after their white buffalo herds that ranged across much of this region during the late 1840s and 1850s. Captain Fetterman's party surveyed a route for a wagon road between Cedar Valley in central Weber County and Provo River northeast of today's Logan UT when they came upon an area which would become Ogden about forty miles due east from where they located Buffalo Park some three years later in October 1849 This tract included what is now North Temple Creek within its boundaries In addition to survey work Captain Fetterman also looked into building a fortification around this new location but nothing resulted until October 25th when he discovered timber suitable for building Fort Randolph just outside present day Salt Lake City He named this new location Fort Deseret after General Brigham Young who had recently come to power as President James Kahlquist’s successor This choice may have been based on rumors that General Young was considering moving his headquarters from Nauvoo, Illinois to Winter Quarters (present day Salt Lake City) in order provide more space for troops stationed at Cedar Valley under command of Major Cumorah Smith; however there is no evidence that such a move actually occurred After several months more work consisting mostly rebuilding sacked buildings at Fort Randolph Captain Fetterman ordered constructionof an even larger fortification known locally as Old Fort Deseret which stands today just northeast of downtown Ogden . Work stopped due to lack of funding soon after completion but resumed several years later when money became available In January 1861 Brigadier General Jesse Lubbock left Iowa Territory bound for California with orders to march against Mexico; however he never reached California or arrived in time for the Civil War On November 16th 1861 Majestic Artillery Sergeant First Class George Armstrong Custer attempted unsuccessfullyto cross US -Mexican boundary near Big Piney NP becoming one of history's most publicized military failures When World War I began America declared war on Germany 8 days later On December 7th 1914 American Expeditionary Force invaded Belgian Congo Soviet Union entered World War 1 without declaring war America remained neutral throughout World War 1 However during WWI America furnished arms & munitions both sides plus financial support totaling $153 million dollars
