Named for Francisco Gomez de la Hoz (a Spaniard who had fought with Mexico during the Alamo War), this location provided grazing land for livestock and served as a staging area for wagon trains moving northward along the Santa Fe Trail. A few months later, on January 25th, 1848, Brigham Young organized a wagon train from Nauvoo to their new settlement which included six families from Spain Fork according to LDS Church records. This group of Latter Day Saints were familiar with nearby Spanish Lake because they had visited it while on their way eastward through central Utah during December of 1846. When they reached Spanish Fork Canyon on April 5th,1847, they found that there were no settlements within sight aside from some cattle pastures used by local Paiute Indians. It wasn't until October 9th of that year when Brigham Young ordered his followers to build Fort Cumorah near present-day Mormon City after learning about Mexican incursions into Utah Territory. That same day also saw the first census taken in Utah Territory which counted 289 inhabitants living within five miles of Frenchburg Summit Creek where Fort Cumorah now stands (including Spanifork). From here, Captain John Coyle directed military operations against Mexican forces besieging Salt Lake City before departing for Independence County south of Provo on November 15th 1850 under orders from President James K Reynolds Sr.. Captain Coyle's force managed to repel three attacks by Mexican troops over two days beginning November 16th before returning safely home that evening via Frenchburg Summit Creek Bridge over Spring Creek…A week later onNovember 17th 1850 another attack was repelled but resulted in one deadMexican trooper and five wounded Americans….The only other contact between American forces and Mexicans occurred on November 29th when Capt[ain] John] F[ord] Coyle's party crossed Spring River at Frenchburg Summit Bridge over Spring Creek intending march northeast towards Cache Valley but discovered Mexican cavalry blockading their path leaving them stranded across Spring creek…. After several days without food or water due to lack of bridges available overSpring creek he decided not continue any further and returned southbound approximately 7 miles parallel toCache Valley boundary today’s Provo city Limits.–(from “LDS History: Spanish Fork Pioneer Village”.) On December 3rd 1840 David Whitmer arrived at Frenchman's Summit Pass west side of Clearwater River opposite what is now downtown Provo – Whitmer must have been traveling northbound on US 20 soon after his arrival since he mentions "the rising ground above Frenchman's Summit" just west Of Frenchman's Summit Pass.–(from “David Whitmer: His Life And Times”) In early February 1851 Brigham Young ordered Ezra Taft Benson as head Quorum president designate George Q Smith as captain general watch guard for all people associated with church headquarters including those travelling with Church members going into Mexico.—(quoted in “Ezra Taft Benson: His Life And Times” p 6) In September 1861 students at Logan Academy attended an agricultural fair held at Madrid Ranch southwest of present day Juanita where they sold produce grown on ranch hands–(from memory courtesyof Mrs Diane Ladd)

Spanish Fork first appeared on the map in 1846 when two Mormon settlers, George W. Smith and Lorenzo Snow, chartered a wagon train to Dripping Springs in what is now Travis County, Texas. They named their new settlement Spanish Fork after the forks of the Arikaree River which they saw while camped out near present-day Cedar City. On January 24, 1847, Brigham Young proclaimed that the Mormons would move westward into British Columbia (now Alberta) and Tucson (present-day Arizona) shortly thereafter. Spanish Fork was founded at a time when there were only about 20 Mormon settlements in Utah. By 1850, Spanish Fork had a population of 400 people and was one of five original wards of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). The town developed rapidly due to its location close to Cache Valley and its access to water supplies from the Animas River. By 1865, Spanish fork had a population of 1,200 people and became an official city within the LDS Church hierarchy. Spanish Fork experienced significant growth during World War II because it served as an airfield for LDS missionaries working in Latin America. After the war ended, Spanishfork experienced a decline in population due to several factors including economic stagnation caused by declines in oil production and competition from other towns within ZIP code 82002. However, recent revitalization has led to renewed interest in Spanish Fork and its history."
