In 1853, Brigham Young assigned George Atherton as captain general of all Mormon troops west of Mexico City. Atherton led an expedition into what is today Weber County that discovered large amounts of coal there which led him to begin developing this new land into a town named Coalville which would later become West Jordan proper. By 1860 about 300 residents lived in Coalville while 1,500 people resided in West Jordan when it was incorporated as a town on December 2nd that year according to contemporary records In 1871 two brothers by the name of Wightman built a small cabin called "The Foothills" just outside today's Southgate neighborhood while they were prospecting for coal near Echo Valley along Interstate 25 northwest ofpresent day WestJordan proper (). They are considered responsible for helping develop what would become today's downtown area including many famous buildings such as The Kirkland House which still stands today and has been used as both a hotel and office building since its construction in 1925 Accordingly Coalville became known as "the birthplace" or "the beginning"ofWestJordan proper where many important events took place over ensuing years including: Pioneer Day (April 14th), Independence Day (July 4th), World War II Memorial Day (April 6th), Gold Rush Days (October 24th-27th) and Christmas Eve/Christmas Morning () On July 11th 1907 Wizard Custer died suddenly during an attempt on General Grant's army at Cedar Mesa Creek northeast of Fort Bridger leaving behind an unfinished gold mine with plans by his father Custer Sr., other venture capitalists associated withCUJO Mining & smelting Co., William Jennings Bryan’s presidential campaign manager,[7] Jeraldine Mahoney author[8], among others The discovery triggered speculation across much Western America regarding whether or not gold could be found within these considerable boundaries—prompting further exploration activity throughout most if not all Western states until methods were developed for detectingand assessmentofgoldproperties
West Jordan, Utah was founded in 1847 by George A. Smith and James W. Cooke. The town was named after the Mount of Zion in Jerusalem, which the United States had consecrated as a national shrine in 1849. The town grew quickly, and by 1860 it had a population of around 1,500 people. By 1870, West Jordan had become an agricultural center with large tracts of land dedicated to agriculture. In the early 20th century, West Jordan became known for its manufacturing activities focused on textiles and goods made from wool and cotton. From the 1940s through 1970s, West Jordan experienced significant growth as a bedroom community for Salt Lake City.
