West Jordan, Utah is a city in Wasatch County, Utah, United States. The population was 921 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Wasatch County. The town was founded in 1847 by site surveyors led by Captain John Sweeny and others of the Mormon Battalion who were moving westward from Nauvoo, Illinois. The town became an agricultural center due to its location on the lower Jordan River and its rich soil. This made West Jordan one of the most important towns inUtah during the early years of Mormonism because it had access to goods brought overland from Nauvoo. In 1960, West Jordan became a suburb of Salt Lake City when Salt Lake City annexed neighboring Provo and Davis counties. As part of this annexation process, West Jordan lost its status as a municipal city and became a rural community known for agriculture only. West Jordan, Utah is a town in Kane County, Utah, United States. The population was 7,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Salt Lake City metropolitan area. West Jordan was founded in 1876 and named for Mount Pleasant, Illinois. The first post office in WestJordan was established on December 9, 1876. The first settler to homestead in the area was James Payson who built an adobe cabin on what is now Cottonwood Heights Drive east of present-day town center. In 1880, Jens Jensen purchased land from Brigham Young and founded the small settlement of Jensen's Grove which included a mill and store. By 1890 there were also several residences and one school building located within today's boundaries of West Jordan Township (then called Kane County). In 1916, John Fenton platted what would become known as "Fenton Ranch" near present day Cedar Hills Cemetery off Cedar Hills Road NW. This acreage would later be annexed by Waco when that city became a suburb of Salt Lake City; however, development never took place on this parcel because it lacked water access or zoning regulations that would have allowed such development. On November 26th 1912 President Woodrow Wilson delivered his famous speech from State College Park in Pennsylvania about American democracy and the need for citizens to participate through their local governments in order to maintain these values before they could be challenged anywhere else including Europe or Asia where those same values might be expressed in a more uniform form with less democracy overall since those areas had greater resources at their disposal.) After giving his address President Wilson walked across Constitution Avenue NW from Independence Hall to Union Station followed by a carriage ride back to State College Park where he delivered another speech onDecember 3rd 1913 about World War I recruiting efforts underway among university students living away from home during that time period). That year also saw the founding of "Pioneering Bankers' League" composed mostly of farmers who went door-to-door collection payments for goods needed for farming such as seed corn etc., later becoming known as Farmers National Bank Of America-(FNBA) In 1922 wagonloads full of rocks were brought into town square by groups led by Edwin Calkins after an infamous landslide destroyed parts ofaggressive Orchard Mesa Hotel west side main street leaving only two stories standing.(Calkins Monument still stands)In 1926 Knoppers moved out west due to health concerns caused by asbestos exposure but returned in 1929 when mining operations closed down nearby Canyonlands Mines leaving much exposed asbestos mineralized rockDCMuseum has acquired original documentary evidence documenting early church activity here including affidavits from early settlers naming both Joseph Smith Jr./John Whitmer/Ezekiel Taft etc., depicting religious services held at various locations around this time including First Presidency Conference room used herein archives
The first Mormon Battalion was organized on October 23, 1846. It was led by Brigham Young and consisted of twenty-six men. The battalion left Nauvoo, Illinois on November 1, 1846, and arrived in Utah on December 4. On January 12, 1847, the battalion launched an attack against the Mormons at Red Fort. They were successful in achieving their objective but were met with heavy resistance from the Mormon defense force. The battalion then retreated back to Nauvoo. In total, thirty-eight soldiers died during its march to Utah.
