The original settlement was near what is now South Street and North Avenue. By 1800, Burlington had grown to include over two thousand citizens. In 1837, Burlington became part of the newly created state of Vermont after it was ceded from New York by President Andrew Johnson during the Second Great American Revolution. It remained an independent municipality until it merged with surrounding municipalities on January 1st 1969 under then-Mayor Bernie Sanders’s leadership into what would become known as Burlington Township. At that point, Burlington became one of only eight townships in Vermont to be incorporated as a municipality rather than simply part of a larger township system which continued until 1975 when all municipalities were abolished within the state except for three: Windham County (New Hampshire), Essex County (New Jersey), and Montpelier (Vermont). Today, Burlington remains an important community with strong economic ties to surrounding counties and states – including both New England and New York – while also boasting some impressive cultural attractions such as its renowned art museum and flagship library which are open to the public every day from 9am-6pm EST. Burlington is named after George Washington and it has been part of the New England region since its founding in 1664. It has a rich history dating back to its incorporation as a village in 1765, when it was part of Rutland County. The first settler in what would become Burlington was John Greenough, who purchased land from Sir William Phips near present-day Watertown on November 10, 1765. He built his home there and called it "Greenough's Grove."

It is the seventh-largest city in Vermont and the second-largest city east of the Mississippi River. Burlington's history dates back to 1668 when it was incorporated as a town. The city became an independent municipality on July 1, 1853 and was renamed Burlington on December 5, 1860 in honor of George Washington Carver. On October 15, 1892, Burlington seceded from the United States and became an international treaty town under the name of "City of Peace." In 1902, the City of Burlington annexed two neighboring towns: Greenfield and Eastilton. On January 8, 1984, Mayor Patrick Hickey proposed that Burlington become an international trade center with a new downtown area to be developed as a world class commercial district overlooking Lake Ontario. The idea gained support from many citizens who saw this as an opportunity to lure more businesses and commerce to their cityscape. After years of study and negotiation by both parties involved, on April 22nd 1984 City Council voted5-2 in favor of annexing South End Township into Burlingame which would have given us our current borders
