They named their new settlement after George Burlingame (1641–1715), an English nobleman who had come to America to explore new lands grants by King George II of Great Britain. From this modest beginning, Burlington grew into one of America's most significant cities during its early years – becoming home to some of the earliest stores and businesses in New England as well as many political leaders including James Otis (1768–1837) andDaniel Webster (1778–1865). After years of hard work by local entrepreneurs such as Amos Stroud (1749–1824) and Reuben Cutler (1760–1836), Burlington reached its peak during the mid-19th century when it boasted over 100 businesses along Main Street alone! In 1875 however, following decades of struggles against various forces such as railroad development that sought to strip away much of downtown business district; a devastating fire destroyed most all but a few original buildings within minutes; economic stagnation followed which led to numerous cycles OF slumps throughout ensuing decades until finally reaching its nadir during World War II when nearly all downtown business activities were suspended due to lack of fuel for war factories – leaving little opportunity for even rudimentary economic revitalization beyond a handful scattered restaurants/cafes/bars & limited light industry operation due to wartime restrictions on 1940s vintage equipment availability which continued into today’s recessionary period It wasn't until 1984 that then Mayor Allan Schmitz revived effortsMain Street revival spearheaded by Executive Director Robert Duffy In response To rapid growth rates among surrounding towns: In2000 City Council voted 3-1to annex neighboring townsWatertown & Northampton In 2002 another annexation resulting in Town Hall being moved from South End Avenueto north end Ave near river
