Burlington, Vermont is a town in Rutland County, Vermont, United States. The population was 10,611 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Rutland County. Burlington is one of the six municipalities in the Burlington Metropolitan Statistical Area and it covers an area of 11 square miles (28 square kilometers). The first people to live in what became Burlington were members of the Algonquian-speaking Mohawk nation. In 1777, General George Washington and his army camped near present-day Burlington while besieging Fort George on Lake Champlain. After days of marching and waiting, Washington's army arrived at night at a place called Saco Bay on August 15th and discovered that there was no site for their encampment because Saco Bay had been filled with high water due to heavy rains that week. As a result of this discovery, Washington decided against moving his troops any further north and instead turned back south to Tilghman's Point on Lake Champlain. This event helped occasion the name " founder" given to Burlington by early European settlers who thought they might have found buried treasure thereabouts – likely as a result of later exploration by explorer John Rolfe throughout New England during his travels through that region in 1624-1625! In 1795–96, two brothers named Nicholas Main were working as surveyors for Samuel Slater in what is now Peabody Township when they noticed some high ground overlooking downtown from which they could see all around them how beautiful it would be if they could build a house there! They began planning their dream home even before getting final approval from Slater but soon realized that building such a large structure would be out of their reach due to lack of available land at that time! They nonetheless continued working towards completing their dream home until finally achieving success in 1802 when they moved into what is today known as Main Street! During America's Revolutionary War (1775-1783), Burlington served as both military and civilian headquarters for General Benedict Arnold's forces marching against British Forces occupation of Vermont. On October 12th, 1778 Arnold issuedorders authorizing Major General Nicholas Main to erect batteries along Middleton Creek so as "to prevent surprise attacks upon our lines." These batteries - later renamed Fort Necessity - remained operational until after American independence was declared on July 4th, 1776. During those years most major events took place within walking distance or viewable camera range: battles fought near present day North Primary School; cannonballs killed many men just yards away from Brunswick Coffee House; stores looted by patriots during late summer series known as Saratoga Campaign; meeting where Declaration of Independence was ratified; Congress adjourned without sending new legislation…the list goes on! All told nearly 2200 citizens participated in various incidents leading up to & culminating with independence!!! One thing which quickly changed following independence was infrastructure: streets were laid down rather than simply being widened where possible since transportation then consisted primarilyof boats & carts! One consequence resulting from this change was increased traffic congestion which negatively impacted business opportunities & quality of life for many Vermonters over ensuing years….. often referred to as "The Great Act Of Tears." It wasn't until 1827 when Burrand Randolph started construction on what would become Downtown Burlington – beginning with an enlargement & improvement project including the construction (1826) & opening (1829) of The Capitol Building complex including State House Annex (& its attached Market House/inn), Old Courthouse Annex (& Post Office annex), Lafayette Square (& several other buildings), State Street Subway Station (opened 1844), Courts Building (& adjacent jail cells)……etc etc etc….allowing much needed development within 1km radius without ever having TO leave town……………..just like today!!!
