One year later, Union General Robert Ewell invaded Confederate territory during the Ulysses S. Grant Peninsular Campaign and discovered that there were several black soldiers stationed within Confederate lines; he ordered them all killed or captured without trial or treatment for any possible criminal behavior The Civil War began on April 12th 1861 when Confederates attacked Fort Sumter; over 620 blacks worked as slaves pointer cannons on duty that day while 2 whites working behind the scenes managed to escape unharmed In 1863, General Robert Ewell decided to march against Richmond instead of retreating through Maryland due to lack of supplies and manpower; he was opposed by Generals Jubal Early and Edward Johnston; these two generals surrendered at Appomattox Court House just south of Petersburg on April 9th 1865 On May 11th 1865 Slavery in America: A Documentary History by James Oakes discusses how before slavery ended fugitive slaves would run into Virginia seeking freedom - this made it difficult for authorities to track down fugitives as they could not be tried under old law which allowed slave owners/masters to buy their slaves back - After emancipation many freedmen settled down with families making sure their new lives were stabilized before looking for passage away from US shores

A group of soldiers from Company I 11th Regiment VA (Cavalry) set out on July 1st 1863 to do just that - burning more than 200 Confederate flags near Blackburnsville before returning home saluteably - fulfilling General Ewell's pledge made at Gettysburg seven months earlier when he accepted responsibility for overseeing Confederate Genovese forces operating east of Richmond between July 1st 1861 through November 25th 1865 inclusive).
