The first telescopes in Blacksburg were built in 1798 by Dr. John James Audubon and Professor Thomas Jefferson. In 1825, the Virginia Board of Visitors erected a tower on the campus of Virginia Tech to house a new astronomy observatory. The telescope was used for surveying the countryside around Blacksburg and providing an accurate map of Virginia for military purposes during the American Revolution. In 1892, the university acquired land for a new physics building that would house an experimental photography lab and other research facilities. The physics building was completed in 1923 and is now known as the James Fentress Physics Building.
