Blacksburg grew rapidly until World War II when it experienced a decline due to racially motivated crime and loss of jobs in transportation and other industries that contributed to rural Electrification (industrialization). However since then it has seen an expansion of education and industry opportunities which have led to its current success story. Today, Blacksburg remains one of America's most diverse communities with over 100% black residents living within its limits; according to 2011 Census data more than half of all businesses are owned by people who identify asblack or multi-racial - more than any other community in Virginia Beach/Norfolk/Newport News combined! Additionally, there are many successful black-owned businesses that help support economic development throughout our region – such as Wawa’s convenience store chain (now headquartered outside BlackSBurg), Grist Mill Brewery (makers of Stonewall Jackson beer) – making us one of the most forward-thinking cities within VA Metro government!

Many black veterans from the Civil War settled in Blacksburg and its surrounding areas, creating a highly visible African American presence in post-war America that has continued to influence Virginians today. The first black person to reside in Blacksburg was John Quincy Adams who arrived there with his family from Boston on July 4, 1795. Adams worked as a goods driver for local farmers before moving to what is now downtown Blacksburg in 1802 and enjoying some success as a storekeeper before he lost his ownership interest following an audit by Highland Springs Assessment District vAdams (1806). He then returned home until 1815 when he again moved to take up residence outside of town limits near present day Westover Drive where he died on December 3rd of that year at age 73 years old after a long illness which had been going on since October 1st according to contemporaneous records In 1827 Ebenezer Baptist Church was organized with sixteen members including Ebenezer Payne who served as pastor until his death two years later In 1840 Isaac Hill purchased land adjacent to present day Parkland Boulevard from James Henthorn for $130 dollars . Hill built two homes on this property which are still standing – one called “Hill House” and another called “Blackstock House” Hill was among the early settlers who intermarried with Virginians of both races and produced many offspring . His children included: James Hill (1851-1929), Mary Elizabeth Hill (1860-1945), Ebenezer Baptist Hill (1863-1937), Alexander Barnett Hill (1868-1948) Isaac Newton Hill Jr.(1870-1950), Alice Barberhill (1872-1965), John Fenton Keyes(baptized November 5th 1870) & Myrtle Shallcross Keyes(baptized October 8th 1876). In 1902 James Fenton Keyes married Evalyn Waite who was also born around this time John Fenton Keyes owned slaves while living there but they were freed upon his purchase of Freedom Hall located just east of town off I6 highway Extensive renovations were done interior/exterior starting about 1957 based mainly upon efforts made by Mrs Asherette Smith Knoppenger daughter Vashti Coleman Estelle Keyser [email protected]
