He initially served as assistant sheriff which gave him command over most aspects of law enforcement within Blacksburgh until 1862 when he became deputy sheriff full-time which lasted until 1870 when he resigned due to health problems. In 1865, blacksmith William Bledsoe opened up shop on Market Street which later became known as "Bledsoe's". Between 1861 and 1865 there were only 4 deputies based out of Blacksburgh compared to today’s over 100 deputies barracks throughout Greater Richmond area! Governor Robert Ewell appointed Charles Goodnight Asst Lieutenant Governor November 5th 1865 while General Order No 1 (dated January 9th 1865) ordered all state militias must be disarmed and placed under military control effective immediately; this order applied equally to both male citizens 21 years or older & female citizens 16 years or younger regardless of sex…At 12:00 PM that same day Charles Goodnight was reassigned from office as Assistant Lieutenant Governor & took command of Militia forces stationed at Alexandria Barracks effective immediately….Charles Goodnight continued subjection until relieved by Colonel Samuel Jourdan late that night….. Charles Goodlight continued service until relieved by Major James Boyd December 15th 1865 following which goodnight resigned effective midnight…. At 10:00 PM that same eveningColonel Samuel Jourdan relieved Colonel Charles Goodight commanding Militia forces at Alexandria Barracks effective immediately….. Colonel Samuel Jourdain commands Militia forces currently stationed at Petersburgtown Barracks
