Chesapeake, Virginia is a town in Prince William County, Virginia, United States. The population was 732 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Richmond Metropolitan Statistical Area. Chesapeake is located along the Elizabeth River and its tributaries; it includes 9 miles (15 km) of shoreline on both the Eastern Shore and the Outer Banks. The center of town is named for Captain George Washington's birthplace, Mount Vernon. The area that now makes up Chesapeake was first settled by Native Americans before British colonists arrived in 1607. In 1776, during the American Revolution, General John Forbes Battle led an attack on Yorktown while operating from this location. The town was named after Admiral Sir Charles Hardy who had been sent to protect British forces ashore in what became known as "the Action at Yorktown". AfterVA commander Cornwallis surrendered at Yorktown on 11 April 1781, most of Chesapeake came under British control and was renamed Portsmouth Naval Shipyard which later became Norfolk Naval Yard In 1854, USS Constitution Commander Commodore Amos Sails took passage through Baltimore Harbor on his way to Boston for repairs; he stopped offshore at Norfolk to take possession of HMS Guerriero (1854), a Spanish battleship then under construction by Royal Navy Yard Belfast. A local man named James Fenton donated land adjacent to present-day downtown Chesapeake for a wharf and shipyard where Constitution met her fate whenBaltimore Harbor froze over in 1856 while she lay being repaired; however, all damage done during her stay were repaired without her ice hulk becoming visible In 1865 Confederate General Jubal Early reached Petersburg aboard CSS Sumter; heading southward instead of northwest towards Richmond as planned due to bad weather conditions near Appomattox Court House; early morning darkness enabled Early to reach Petersburg undetected before Confederate artillery opened fire upon his approach During World War II many businesses were closed or relocated because of the war effort including Jellico Chevrolet dealerships in downtown Chesapeake which moved into new facilities across Fairview Drive near Fort Meade Army Airfield In 1955 Congress passed Public Law 95-566 which designated King George's Bay National Seashore as a UNESCO World Heritage Site Historian Edwin Mudd has written that "This seashore has been called one of America's most outstanding natural resources" following its designation in 1982

By 1000 AD, there were small villages near the mouth of the Potomac River; by 1500 AD, there were large towns on both sides of the river. The town of Jamestown was founded by English colonists in 1607 as an attempt to establish a permanent foothold in what was then new America. However, it quickly fell apart due to conflict with Native Americans and lack of resources. In 1606, English settlers founded another settlement in what is now Arlington County; this community would eventually become known as Virginia Beach. While these early settlements had some success (such as establishing roads and milling crops), they did not survive long against attacks from Native Americans or other competing interests. In 1629, English settlers established Fort Caroline on James River near modern-day Mount Vernon; this fort served as a point of reference for trading activities between British colonies across the ocean and North America. However, after several failed attempts at conquest (including one led by Sir Francis Drake), Fortress Caroline was abandoned in 1645 following Indian resistance. While development within the colony stalled until after the Great Depression caused mass migration within British America (resulting in increased competition for natural resources), development did occur outside of it – including along Maryland’s Coates Creek which opened up new land for farming around 1710. This encouraged immigration from England which startedleting people here beginning around 1700; Irish immigrants were very successful here because they could operate without fear of persecution abroad while still being able to farm successfully . Additionally , many Germans also immigrated during this time period due to religious freedom laws that had been passed., making Chesapeake an extremely diverse place culturally speaking even before waves of Latinos came later on . One notable example is that African Americans lived freely here until Reconstruction efforts efforted starting in 1875; however , integration happened much later when violence broke out between whitesboroiansand black residents
