Christianburg is a city in Prince William County, Virginia, United States. The population was 12,844 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Prince William County and part of the Fairfax County metropolitan area. The first Christiansburg was laid out in 1755 by Captain James Cook as an agricultural settlement on the Potomac River in present-day Arlington County. The town was named for Saint Christopher (Christopher) because he had given his life to rescuing drowning men from a shipwreck on December 7, 1626. In 1771, Christianburg became a separate county under Virginia's Cumberland Parish system due to its strategic location within easy reach of both Richmond and Williamsburg. In 1824, when George Washington extended his federal territory eastward beyond Alexandria into Prince William County, Christiansburg became the county seat of that new district. By 1850, however, Petersburg had replaced Christiansburg as the economic center ofPrince William County; so much so that by 1857 Petersburg had supplanted Christiansburg as the official name of the townspeople. At that time Christianburg consisted mainly of small villages scattered around rural farmssteads and roadsides along Route 123—the original town square now lies just outside its limits—and it took some time for people to come together to form a more centralized government hereabouts with all their essential civic functions taken care of through Baptist churches affiliated with one another and led by pastors elected from their congregations themselves (a process now known as church governance). As development proceeded throughout Fairfax County during this period (beginning with what is now Northern Virginia), Christianityburgh gradually lost ground but never quite fell away altogether; indeed it experienced rather modest growth until after World War II when suburban sprawl began creeping up through Prince Williamtownsendeveloping vast areas which would eventually encompass much of modern day ChristianBURGH while also displacing adjacent homespun villages such as Dutch Creek or Fairleyville. However despite these setbacks over time many people have continued to call ChristBURGH home including many who live today right up against those sprawling suburbs! Today there are more than 100 buildings within walking distance either directly or indirectlyof each other in what used to be only about two blocks square!
