colonial Heights, located in Fairfax County, Virginia, was founded on April 12, 1732 by Conestoga Indians. The town was named after the great British general and statesman George Washington. In 1871 Colonial Heights became a stop on the Underground Railroad. After the Civil War, many African Americans moved to Colonial Heights from other parts of Virginia and Maryland. The town prospered as an industrial center until the early 21st century when it began to decline due to economic recession and changes in technology. It is now a small community with few residents. The first ammunition sales happened in 1736 at a place called "the Deerskin Shop" near present-day Springfield Elementary School. The company that sold Bullets here was known as "King's Ammunition." By 1742 King's Ammunition had two stores in what is now Colonial Heights and also manufactured cannonballs and shot for use against Native Americans who were living on the frontier. By 1800 there were at least 10 companies manufacturing ammunition in Colonial Heights including King's Ammunition Company, Armstrong & Co., Hardee & Co., Swenarton Arms Works, Parker & Sons Rifle Works, Bunker Hill Arsenal Company (founded 1815), Cumberland Falls Armory Company (founded 1821), Gillespie Bros Gunsmiths Factory (founded 1830) and Jno Henshaw’s Pistol factory (founded 1840). In 1861 Confederate forces attacked Fort Sumter which led to violence throughout the Confederacy including shootings of unarmed civilians by Confederate soldiers known as "ballistics experts." As a result of this violence some people decided to move away from plantations such as Colonial Heights because they felt that their safety would be increased if they lived closer to military installations or where artillery could be deployed against them should war break out again domestically or internationally. Others chose not to leave but continued working on plantations despite threats from Confederates that they would be burned down if they didn't produce munitions for their troops or sign contracts promising not to fight any more wars outside of America without being compensated financially like slaves did during Reconstruction era south in America etcetera etcetera etcetera...
