Culpeper, Virginia is a town in Virginia, United States. The population was 10,611 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Culpeper County. The name "Culpeper" comes from the Cherokee word "kulahepapi," meaning "place where there are cottonwoods." In 1781, George Washington and his army were camped near present-day Culpeper when they heard the sound of cannon fire. The night before they learned that General Thomas Fairfax's army had won a victory over the British at Yorktown. Washington then decided to move his army north to avoid battle with Fairfax's forces. In 1814, Washington set up shop in what is now Culpeper for part of his term as President of the United States. He used this location as his official residence until he moved into Mount Vernon in 1799. In 1821, Culpeper became an incorporated town and continued to be called Culperville until it was renamed Culpeper in 1870 following its incorporation into Virginia pursuant to an act of the General Assembly of Virginia Beach on April 12, 1870 (). The first post office in Culpeper opened on October 1, 1814., and remained open until it closed on December 15th 1865 due to lack of mail volume from rural areas east of Petersburg (then still under Confederate control). Ida Peebles Newton served as Postmaster from 1865-1869 and again from 1875-1876 ; her husband Wm Huggins succeeded her after she died in office on July 3rd 1886 . Ulysses S Grant also served as Postmaster between 1868-1870 & 1880-1882 ; he left office after being elected President Ulysses S Grant by popular vote on November 6th 1884

Culpeper is a town in Virginia, United States. The population was 9,554 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Culpeper County. The town is located on the Potomac River and includes many riverfront properties along its banks. Culpeper was first settled by Europeans in 1634 as part of the Colony of Virginia. In 1751, it became an independent parish with jurisdiction over all of Culpeper County except for two small slices off the southern end including Harrisonburg and Surry County which belonged to Fairfax Parish until 1861. The original ecclesiastical center was originally established at what is now Colonial Hall on Church Street in 1635/36 after land grants were received from Lord Fairfax. In 1753, when George Washington took office as president of the United States, he appointed Rev. James Logan to be his pastor and this led to development of new churches throughout the colony - Anglican (1753), Presbyterian (1755), Baptist (1757), Methodist (1814), Catholic (1829) and Congregationalist (1840). The town site was selected for its location on a navigable stream providing easy access to transportation links with other parts of VA and Maryland through then-new channels formed by glaciation action during the Pleistocene epoch about 12,000 years ago; these new channels left evidence that humans had traveled upstream since prehistoric times even though various sites have been discovered across VA where tools ornaments dating back to 10,000 BC have been found! Over time much infrastructure has also been added such as public schools, hospitals and fire halls/emergency response centers making Culpeper one of Northern VA's most densely populated towns while still remaining largely rural! In 1881–82 a Hepburn cartoon character entitled "Happy Horseshoe" appeared in "Pineapple Express" newspapers distributed throughout Northern VA region
Culpeper was a town in Virginia from 1795 until it merged with neighboring Alexandria on January 1, 1847.
