It has been said that Culpeper, Virginia was founded by the Potomac River. The area now known as Culpeper was originally part of Prince George's County and was first mentioned in a deed dated November 10, 1677. The land for which Culpeper is named was granted to Major John Smith and Captain John Butler on July 3, 1754 by King George II of Great Britain. It had been speculated for some time that the name Culpeper derived from Culp's Meadows located in Prince George's County about two miles east of present day Culpeper. However, no evidence exists to support this claim. In 1801, Colonel James Jarrell sold 1/4 acre of land at armory and 50 acres further downriver to Lieutenant Colonel Nicholas Randolph for £200 sterling. This armory became the nucleus around which the town developed over the next few years. By 1807, there were five buildings within the limits of what is now culpeper: one storehouse (now used as a post office), three churches (the first being built in 1775), an arsenal (founded in 1800), a schoolhouse (founded in 1810) and a pound or jail (1811). As early as 1798, target shooters from near Fredericksburg began using local woods adjacent to present day Arlington Cemetery for shooting practice; however targets were not actually shot from here until about 1800 when cannons were brought into use at this location. In 1814-1815 Commander James Shields used nearby Fort Monroe as his field fortification during operations against General Phillip Payne and his Creek forces during Red Clay Warbler Campaign season; while at Fort Monroe Shields’ command men killed more than 100 Native Americans with shots off several guns mounted on small masts just acrossedriver from shoreline at modern day New Bridge Landing Site where they camped each night before embarking home following morning’s hunt etc.). After General Robert Easley capturedPope's Fort Pitt during operations against Native Americans about 1800, he renamed it Alexandria for himself and his wife Elizabeth Armistead - an event that is still commemorated annually with a parade through downtown Alexandria every April 25th celebration known as "Easley Day." The town was laid out platting out lots around Church Street between 1814 and 1818 when navigation on the Shenandoah River became easier because large piles of gravel had been added to form a road bed for steamboats navigating its length from Friendship Valley downstream to Charlottesville Landing where goods could be loaded onto ships bound for points further upstream or downriver before being delivered back upriver again at nearby Point Lookout Ferry Landing where passengers disembarked onto riverboats which then took them all the way downriver to Lynchburg where they unloaded at New Market Square opposite today's Kelly Library before returning upstream again via Sarah Tompkins Bridge across Appomattox Court Yard until coming ashore finally at its present location around deep water bayou just beyond Old Dominion University limits today culpepervirginia
