Fairfax, Virginia is a town in Fairfax County, Virginia, United States. The population was 102,824 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous municipality in Fairfax County after Alexandria. Its name comes from George Washington's home and estate of Fairfax House on the Potomac River. The town was founded by Col. John Yeoman in 1755 as a planned community on land that he had percentively purchased from the British Crown for $2,500. It was named for General George Washington because he lived nearby and favored its development as an agricultural center with cotton plantations and markets for spices and manufactured goods. The first post office opened in 1756, and it became one of the largest towns in Virginia with over 100 residents by 1800. By 1820 it had shrunk to 10 residents due to rapid growth of Alexandria around the same time. However, Arlington Heights followed soon after as another planned community adjacent to Fort Worth on Arlington Heights Road began growing rapidly during this period; by 1870 Arlington Heights had more than 50 homes and 150 businesses while Fairfax had only 20 residents. In 1830 Arlington Heights annexed neighboring Loudoun County; however, Loudoun never gained full status as a separate county until 1871 when it merged into Fairfax County along with much of Prince Georges County (now Maryland). This left Fairfax with just 14 residents by 1900 but quickly grew to over 300 during World War II due to increased military activity around its borders – including four bomber bases within its boundaries – making it one of the most heavily populated areas in America at that time. In 1957 Fairfax Township was established as a result of consolidation of several smaller towns within its boundaries (including Falls Church and Winchester) into one entity; since then it has grown even larger with annexations from other jurisdictions including New Carrollton Borough (1986), Lorton Townships (2002), Manassas Park Borough (2007), Bowie Townships (2008), CentrevilleTownship (2009) and Sterlingtownship (2013). Fairfax is a town in Fairfax County, Virginia, United States. The population was 26,754 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest municipality in Fairfax County and the smallest of the three counties. Its namesake is George Washington and it forms part of the Fredericksburg–Arlington Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what is now Fairfax County was James Robertson in 1790. The land for which Fairfax stands was part of what is now Loudoun County until 1821 when it became part of Virginia as a result of the Virginia Constitution of 1776. In 1831, land around present-day Arlington Heights was annexed to Fairfax and its name changed to Arlington. In 1871, Arlington Heights became independent from Fairfax and adopted its own local government with a mayor and board of commissioners. In 1907, Arlington Heights amalgamated with neighbouring Mechanicsville to form what is now known as Fairfax (though Mechanicsville still retains some autonomy). One reason why Arlington Heights separated from Fairfax may have been that John Fenton Steele wanted more control over his neighbour's schools – he had founded two major high schools there: King's School (now Dominion High School) in 1903 and Northern Baptist Junior College (later Northern Christian University) in 1916 – than he received from his fellow county officials. One important event during this time period took place when an act providing for school consolidation throughout Loudoun and Princewilliam counties was passed by the General Assembly on October 15th, 1913 without debate or amendment; this law merged all four public school systems into one entity under the jurisdiction of a five-member Board Of Education – including Alexandria [of course], Busby Park [in Falls Church], Fort Worth [near downtown], Glen Burnie [outside Centreville], Manassas Junction [just outside Rosslyn] – setting off a chain reaction whereby other jurisdictions within Loudoun & Princewilliam Counties followed suit so that by 1923 all but Alexandria were unified into one educational system with 23 schools employing 3200 teachers! This single organization would continue to operate until 1938 when it was replaced by comprehensive school system created through legislation authored by Gov’t Reprintsman Arthur Ashe! A significant development within American education during this time period occurred when both Driscoll’s Bros., publishers of "Richmond Times" newspaper began teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) to Virginians attending their courses at DeWitt Clinton School for Boys near Petersburg on February 16th 1922; ESL classes continued throughout World War II!! It wasn't until after World War II that any large changes took place within our educational institutions within Greater Washington area; these changes included opening up Commonwealth Schools District No2 adjacent to Bethesda annexing Rockville Center along with many new private/independent charter schools opened throughout Greater Washington area !!
