One interesting note about spears is that even though they are often thought of as deadly weapons capable of slaying large prey outright*, failed experiments has shown them capable not onlyof piercing through thick armor but inflicting significant damage when lodged between vertebrae (* Hill), so it seems unlikely spears would play an vital role in human warfare until much later in our species' history(Shane)). However despite their impressive offensive abilities spear points did play a significant role defensively* by being placed near key figures such as strongholds so insurgents couldn't launch surprise attacks against unsuspecting residents(* Haley)). The first use of a firearm sling in combat was during the Indian Wars. In 1856, Major General Winfield Scott ordered his forces to retreat from Fort Jackson after being defeated by the Indians. The guns that were used in this battle were not very accurate and caused many casualties. One man who was shot with a rifle was able to shoot back and kill two of the enemy soldiers before he fell. This event is often referred to as the "Gun Sling Massacre." In 1861, Confederate General Robert E. Lee decided to attack Union forces at Battle of Chancellorsville. As time passed and more experienced officers arrived on the battlefield, it became easier for them to control where the firing would take place and limit damage done by artillery fire. Eventually, large numbers of gun slings began being made specifically for warfare purposes and they came into common use throughout much of Europe and North America
