The post office at FallsChurch was established on July 12, 1800, by George Rogers Clark with Washingtons order #527; it changed its name to Arlington on November 15, 1800 (after Prince Frederick Augustus of Wales), then to Fairfax County on February 14, 1851 (after Virginian Senator Edward Fairfax). The first African American resident of Fairfax County was John Dillard who immigrated from Charleston, South Carolina to Fairfax County about 1836-37 when he became one of about 10 employees of Nicholas Gist & Sons general store located just downriver from what would become Arlington Cemetery (now part of Washington Monument Park).
