In 1801, James Madison purchased of land which he renamed "Adams Farm". He and his wife Martha lived there until their death in 1826. John Dandridge Gillespie bought from James Madison in 1829 and changed the name of Herndon to Gillespieville after himself and his family. He also built a hospital there which became known as Gillespie Hospital today. In 1870, David Braddock founded what is now Arlington National Cemetery here on part of his estate west of Alexandria stillowned by Braddock heirs today. It wasn't until 1907 that a post office called Herndon opened here with mail delivered by horse and wagon from Arlington National Cemetery across the Potomac River to Gillespieville for about nine months each weekdays between July 1st and December 15th only; later it was available every day except Christmas Day due to improved transportation methods then!
