It is home to the Herndon National Military Park and Museum, as well as two national museums - the Smithsonian American History Museum and the National Air and Space Museum. Herndon is a town in the Commonwealth of Virginia, United States. The population was 13,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Alexandria–Falls Church, VA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was first settled in 1734 by George Herndon and his brother James Herndon. George's son John married Anne Fairfax and they took over management of the plantation from their father. In 1802, James Herndon II died leaving his two daughters as executors of his estate. One daughter married General Nathaniel Pickens and one daughter married Major General John Brownrigg. In 1847, Colonel Robert Ewell decided to make Herndon an incorporated village for himself and other officers in the Confederate army during the American Civil War. He named it after him and its post office was established that year with Wm Hinton as its first postmaster. After Ewell's death in 1865, control passed to his widowBetty Ewell until her death in 1928; then it reverted back to Betty's children except for Esther Fenton who succeeded her mother asieftaincy governor on December 5th 1932 due to her grandfathers' deaths certificates having been filed too late). On November 2d 1935 a new charter organization called "Herndon Civic Association" was formed with seven members including Betty's grandson-in-law Harry Bridges (the husband of Betty's granddaughter Alice Bridges) as president (the association later changed its name to "Herndon Roads Preservation Society"). The society built a number of roads within town limits which remain today including York Road (named after Henry Lee York while he served as mayor), Pond Road (named after Drury Pond nearby), Sunrise Drive (which follows The Potomac River upstream from town center), Maple Lawn Drive ( paralleling Preston Road opposite White Sands Elementary School), Indian Ford Road ((now Elmwood Drive)), Westpark Boulevard ((now Government Boulevard)), Apple Blossom Way ((now Lyndale Avenue)), Cherry Blossum Way ((now Rockingham Avenue)) and Dogwood Way ((now Ridgefield Avenue)). On July 1st 1942 local government legislation reorganized Virginian towns into regional councils modeled after those found throughout much of North America with each regional council having three members selected by vote from among its member towns plus one representative from each county in the region with no power exercised beyond matters addressed by that specific council or delegation thereof

Herndon is a town in Fairfax County, Virginia, United States. The population was 20,558 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Fairfax County. The town was founded in 1751 by George Washington and Anne Herndon as a place for farming and hunting. In 1801, it became the capital of West Virginia Territory. The first European to arrive in what is now Fairfax County was Captain John Smith who landed on Roanoke Island in 1599 and named it "Herndon" after his home county of Hampshire, England. He reported that he found "a great tract of land which would furnish us with an ample foundation for our future habitations." In 1624, James Armistead purchased 1,000 acres (400 ha) of land east of present-day Herndon from the Monacan Indians for £200 sterling ($40 USD). This area became known as Fort Armstrong orArmory Lane because it served as the westernmost point from which English settlers could launch raiding missions against Native Americans living east of James City River. In 1753, George Washington purchased 10 acres (4 ha) east of present-day Herndon from Nicholas Botkin for £100 sterling ($30 USD). Washington used this property to build his home Mount Vernon and other properties in Herndon and Arlington counties. On February 14, 1800, President Thomas Jefferson issued a proclamation creating West Virginia Territory including parts of Fairfax County including Herndon Township. On December 16th same year Congress passed an act establishing what would become West Virginia University at Morgantown. In 1802 when part of Arlington County were detached to form Loudoun County (present day NorthernVirginia), most residents within Fairfax Town voted not to secede but some did leave or move away due to economic hardship caused by war with Mexico; however many remained until 1861 when all eastern portions except Alexandria were annexed into ConfederateVirginia duringthe American Civil War because they feared Union military occupation if they remained independent . After the surrender on April 9th 1865 many residents returned back into Fairfax Town although some remain today primarily around Mount Vernon Estate
