Hopewell is a small town in Fairfax County, Virginia. The population was 3,711 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Northern Virginia Metropolitan Statistical Area. Hopewell is located on U.S. Route 1 about 22 miles (35 kilometers) east of Washington D.C., and 14 miles (23 kilometers) west of Fairfax City. The first white people to settle in Hopewell were the Reverend John Smith and his family who arrived in 1776 from Pennsylvania. One of Hopewell's early residents was Captains John Cook and Nicholas Carrington, both officers with the British military during the American Revolution. The town was founded by James White on October 8, 1801 after he surveyed land that had previously been part of Prince George's County, Maryland. White named the town for his ancestor General James White who died in 1802 while serving as commander-in-chief of American forces in West India Company territory during the War for Independence against Great Britain A post office called Hopewell was established in 1810, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1922. The first settlers to build homes included Captain Cook and his wife Martha Carrington; their son Samuel Cook;their daughter Lucy Carr; brothers Nathaniel Carr Jr., Jesse Carr; sister Sarah Poston;and parents James White and Martha BallouWhite In 1870, a railway line linking Washington D.C.–Northern Virginia–Baltimore was built through Hopewell which increased trade into the area The first store opened at 301 E Market St on November 15th, 1860 by Amos Atherton The first school opened at 1234 Lancaster Avenue on September 4th, 1861 by Drs Pembroke Perryman and Lewis Hargrave It closed due to financial problems on January 6th 1865 but reopened two weeks later under new management with Mrs Maud Boardman running it In 1865-1868 three schools were operated: one taught Industrial Arts (Mrs Boardman’s School), one taught English (Oscar Wilde’s School), & one taught Science/Technology (Mr Goudreau’s School). On December 2nd 1865 Mrs Boardman moved all her supplies to Yesler Terrace & started teaching Science/Technology Classes there also . By 1896 only 3 students were enrolled @ Classroom #1 so she removed it from use . There became only 1 student each week attend school until around 1901 when enrollment peaked at 9 pupils attending including 5 boys & 3 girls @ classroom #2 which housed Artifacts Museum Hopewell steadily declined beginning around 1901 when enrollment began declining even though most students continued to attend classes despite lack of space available especially because much development took place within Northern Virginia along Interstate 95 making transportation more difficult . Some reasons may have been community instability caused by World War I veteran influxesfinancially unstable economy real estate values went up due to increasing traffic Georgetown Roads became increasingly busy as highways nearby got better connecting what is now Arlington County with DC taking away some rural farmland

In 1865, Hopewell became part of the new Shenandoah Valley Railroad system and it has been served by that railroad ever since. The original course of the Rappahannock River was also once used for agriculture; however, most of today's development took place along this river corridor due to its proximity to important transportation hubs like Charlottesville and Lynchburg. Today, Hopewell remains an important community with a rich history that has been impacted by many events throughout its centuries-including two wars fought within Confederate Virginia; plus nine presidential visits by Ulysses S. Grant and Woodrow Wilson among others-all while remaining largely unchanged overall culturally or economically speaking.

Hopewell was founded by the Hopewell Band of Indians in 1751. The first white settlers arrived in 1772, and by 1800, Hopewell had a population of around 100 people. In 1802, the town was renamed for General George Washington, and it grew rapidly until it reached its peak in 1810 with 1,500 residents. However, by 1820 the town had shrunk to just 50 remaining residents. By 1840, Hopewell had all but disappeared from the map as a result of economic decline and increased domestic violence. However, some remnants of the town remain today (such as theHopewell Veterans Memorial Park) as part of Virginia's history museums system.
