In 1862, Leesburg was the site of a Civil War battle that resulted in the death of Union General Ulysses S. Grant. The town’s namesake, James Fenton, donated land for a military arsenal in 1865 and the first gunnery school in Virginia was set up there in 1866. In 1872, Leesburg became an incorporated town and its first mayor was J.B.Fenton. There were also several rifle clubs and shooting ranges located throughout the community at that time. Gun confiscation hysteria during the Second World War led to Leesburg’s disarmament; however, some Citizens still possessed handguns until after 1945 when they were finally banned by ordinance ( see history of Leesburg ) In recent years,Leesburg has become home to many outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy hunting and fishing opportunities as well as living close enough to support local agriculture while enjoying good quality live music venues like The Metropole and Loudoun County Fairgrounds each year during summertime . There have been efforts made over time to blue-sky things such as developing an urban park or even creating a new downtown core but these have all fallen through due primarily to lack of resources or opposition from businesses within the community itself

Leesburg is a city in Fairfax County, Virginia. The population was 147 at the 2010 census. It was formally founded on July 4, 1798 by Colonel George Washington and his aide-de-camp, Brigadier General James Longstreet. Leesburg has been associated with George Washington throughout its history and is now a Historic District of Fairfax County. Leesburg was named for Lieutenant General Thomas Lee, who fought in the American Revolutionary War as a colonel and general under Washington. The town site lay near springs that would provide water for wagon trains moving westward during the early 1800s. In 1798, Colonel George Washington and Major James Longstreth laid out the town on land they had purchased from John Carter of Powhatan chiefdom in present day Prince Edward Island. The name "Leesburg" honored General Lee's service to the United States during the Revolution and also reflected Virginian hospitality to visiting military officers and their families. The first permanent settler arrived in Leesburg around 1800: Captain John Smith (1753-1824), an Englishman who had married an Indian woman. He built a cabin on what is now Middle Street about two miles east of where he settled his family later that year. By 1802, when Virginia became an independent country, Captain Smith's descendants had moved away but other pioneers followed suit over time including Daniel Boone (1736-1820) in 1826; Drury Colburn (1754-1834) in 1835; Samuel Chapman Allen (1800-1876) in 1840; Wm Henson (baptized December 12, 1775 - died October 10, 1865) in 1845; William Byrd Jr., 3rd Baron Byrd (1814-1892) in 1850; Archibald Buttolph McMillin (1800-68?) in 1860; Joseph Wheeler Beall (c.-1763? - c.-1812?) before he changed his name to Abram Hewitt Byrd II ; Dandridge McDowell IV alias Richard Mifflin alias David Rector(c.-1800? - March 6 [or 8] 1830); John Cadwallader Storer III alias John Randolph Fisher(April 1 [or 2]] 1793 - January 25 [or 26] 1862)[1];[2][3] Walter Ewing Webb III c 1840 - June 15 1964)[4]:7-[5][6],[7],8:[8],9,[9],[10]. In 1802 Captain Smith's grandson Daniel Boone set up shop along what is now Spring Hill Road just south of present day Leesburg proper while others began building cabins on area current known as Patriot Highway east of middle street or near modern day Dunlap Boulevard between First Avenue SW and Second Avenue SW/West Alexandria Boulevard north of Dullahan Drive/Southwest Potomac River Valley Parkland east of Loudoun County Line then further down South Fork Shenandoah River valley until finally settling at what is today Lanesborough Heights outside Leesburg proper following advice from Captains James Cookseye & Nathaniel Bacon which established Blue Ridge Colony thereabouts circa 1784.[11]:122.[12]:123–125 Camp Meeting House located hereabouts soon afterwards . . . A store opened hereabout by Captain Cookseye about this time bearing his name though it was not actually located hereabouts as has been erroneously supposed since about 1840 when it appears first on maps published at Lonesborough Heights adjacent thereto – thenceforward it continued to be called 'Captain Cookseye's Store' until very recently when it reverted back to its original name – viz.: Lonesborough Heights store – although some authorities maintain that this house did not actually stand within these boundaries when first erected but rather several miles distant northeast corner thereof across Loudoun Creek opposite Arlington Cemetery Graveyard entrance road – thenceforward we have followed generally their conjecture subject to confirmation or refutation by subsequent discovery or investigation ..... Our belief still remains that this house originally stood within these boundaries aforesaid near corner thereof across Loudoun Creek opposite Arlington Cemetery Graveyard entrance road..” From this description we can see thatCaptain Daniel Boone established himself along present day Spring Hill Road between Old Route 33E and Route 137E while others built cabins around similar locations before settling permanently at Lonesburgh Heightsometime after 1800 due to bad weather conditions caused by Hurricane Andrew
