In 1853–1854, Wm Cranch established an agricultural fair which became one of the most important events in local history. In 1861–1862 Virginians fought for Confederate causes during the American Civil War; some stores and residences burned while others sided with Union forces. On July 20th 1861 (July 4th following their war declaration), Union General Robert Ewart Burnside attackedLee's headquarters near Manassas Junction; no casualty resulted from this attack but several buildings were destroyed including Bell’s laboratory where he developed Telstar telecommunications systems used throughout much of America during World War II On October 1st 1862 Confederate General Pte John Hays attacked US military installation at Alexandria Governor’s Mansion resulting in loss of life including that of Colonel Harry Smith commanding Company D Second Battalion Virginia Cavalry Regiment killed together with 2 enlisted men under command Major John Smeaton Ulysses S Grant ordered Butler to burn all bridges across Rappahannock River thus cutting off retreat for Confederate army which failed to achieve its objective despite heavy losses Aftermath saw many refugees flood into Northern Virginia leaving behind properties they had never seen before such as Belle Aire Plantation which still stands today

Leesburg was home to both Confederate General Robert E. Lee and Union General Ulysses S. Grant during the American Civil War and many residents still live in the town today. Leesburg was founded by Scots-Irish settlers in 1755 as a small backwater on Rappahannock River near modern day Falls Church. The name derived from an area of high ground just west of town that was called "Leesburgh" because there were several farms thereabouts used by the Yeomanry unit of the British Army during World War II as an airfield and training camp for Allied pilots operating over southern Virginia and Maryland. In 1839, James O'Neal donated land to lee Borough in exchange for building him a steamboat landing on Rappahannock River opposite present day downtown Leesburg - this Landing became known as "O'Neal's Landing". The first store opened on Main Street in 1841 (now Main Street Baptist Church), with one other business opening within two years: A blacksmith shop run by Elijah Robinson located on First Street next door to what is now St Peters Episcopal Church (a Presbyterian church). After a fire destroyed most businesses in 1861 due to lack of insurance, local businessman John Watkins built what became known as Watkins' Storefront Brewery across from present day Community College campus – which remains open today and produces light beer under the brand name King's Dominion University Basketball Games tickets (formerly known as Jarryd Green tickets) – making it one of only two breweries left standing within walking distance of Leesburg today! On July 13th, 1865 Confederate General Robert E.
