Leesburg is a town in Prince William County, Virginia, United States. The population was 5,783 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington D.C. metropolitan area. Leesburg is one of the oldest settlements in Prince William County and was first known as "Harrison's Ford". In 1814, General James Hays decided to establish a military post on the Potomac River between Harrison's Ford and Fredericktown because he felt that an attack by Native Americans would be more difficult if they were spread out over a large area. He named the post for Brigadier General Thomas Lee, who had died in 1812 during the War of1812. The first permanent settler in Leesburg was John Drury in 1825 when he built a log cabin on what is now Courthouse Square. Leesburg became an important crossroads for trade and transportation due to its location near several major rivers and canals as well as its position along Route 7 highway which connected Washington D.C.–Baltimore and points eastward. In addition to its role as a commercial center, Leesburg also served as an agricultural production center for many years until advancements in technology made it possible to grow crops other than tobacco such as corn and soybeans instead. The town has seen growth since 2000 when it annexed portions of neighboring Henrico County including Calverton According to the 2010 US Census, there are 5,783 people living in Leesburg total – 3,834 households (54% family), 2,937 non-family residents (24% single/never married/divorced/ bachelor/widower), 1 resident alien (1 student)

However, with increasing industrialization and lack of investment throughout much of Virginia during this time period, Leesburg fell behind schedule and only attained some level of development by the turn of the century. Today,Leesburg remains a small community with few buildings remaining from its early days as a commercial center.
