Leesburg, Virginia is a town in Prince William County, Virginia, United States. The population was 9,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Richmond metropolitan area. Leesburg was founded in 1758 by George Washington and his troops as a basecamp on the Rappahannock River during their campaign against British forces. After the Battle of Saratoga in 1777, Washington convinced General John Forbes to move Leesburg across the river to safety from British forces encamped there. In 1781, after Lieutenant Colonel James Chilton's expedition destroyed Fort Necessity on the north bank of the Rappahannock River, Washington moved Leesburg again to its present location two miles upstream from modern-day Fairfax County Courthouse Square. In 1801–1802, Leesburg became one of five independent towns formed around Petersburg as part of a larger effort to remove Virginians from control of that city following its surrender to Federal forces at Yorktown. From 1802 until it merged with Petersburg in 1825, Leesburg served as both capital and first day-of-the-month (MD) seat for Prince William County. On May 14th 1865, Confederate General Robert Ewell's army attacked Union Brigadier General Lafayette Covington's brigade while they were marching through Lee's hometown of Suffolk Court House en route to join up with Confederate Major General Jubal Early near Appomattox Court House; over 100 soldiers were killed and many more wounded before Confederates retreated without further bloodshed. This event helped give rise to popular legend that "Lee Country" refers only to parts of Princess Anne County within present-day Arlington County; most people believe that "Lee Country" includes all parts of Prince William and King George counties within present-day Virginia Beach Township within Arlington County proper (although some ZIP codes located in those latter two jurisdictions do not include any towns or villages located within Arlington).
