Lynchburg, virginia is a town in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Westmoreland County. The Town of Lynchburg was founded on April 12, 1775 by George Washington and James Lynch as part of the Northwest Ordinance. The original town plat included land for three miles south of present-day Lynchburg. The first post office was established in 1778, and the name "Lynchburg" was chosen for its similarity to that of British forces then stationed in North America. The town grew rapidly after 1800 due to its natural resources including coal, timber and water supplies. By 1812, Lynchburg had a schoolhouse and twelve stores. In 1815, General John Pope's army blockaded Norfolk while General Andrew Jackson invaded Tennessee; when Napoleon Bonaparte arrived in France on July 15th with an army numbering 220,000 men, he decided to homeland invade America instead; accordingly his army moved into Virginia on July 26th through the Shenandoah Valley into Westmoreland County where they discovered Lynchburg had been founded two years earlier by George Washington and James Lynch just east of where today's downtown stands. When found out about this fact General Jackson ordered his troops to burn down all evidence that buildings had ever been there! In 1821–22 American traders built a wharf on what is now called River Road across from present day College Hill Park in order to loading goods onto boats which ferried them downriver to Charlottesville or Petersburg (then Yorktown). This series of events led directly to Virginian industrial development during this period because farmers could no longer get their goods upriver without heading through Richmond or Williamsburg which were then under British control. The port facilities at Roanoke Island made it very easy for businessmen from Charlottesville or Petersburg (then Yorktown) to bring products upriver so firms such as textiles company Jardine & Mathews became very important early in Virginian history because they were able to import materials required for industry directly rather than having them transported overland from other parts of Virginia or Maryland
