In 1864 Confederate General Jubal Early burned all but two buildings in Manassas (the only time such an act has been documented). Union General Ulysses S Grant ordered Early's unit to retreat and burn any remaining buildings during his campaign against Confederate forces early that year. On July 9, 1861 a military parade led by Major-General Winfield Scott began at noon outside the old courthouse here for ceremonies marking news of secession from United States for the Confederacy under captain John Brownell Davie and men under Lieutenant Colonel Nathaniel Banks......At 4 Pm., Maj.-Gen.'s Parade drawing throngs from cities across Va., passed thro' Alexandria & terminated near Loudoun House where Genl Wm Halleck had reposed...............From then until 8 A m....a grandiose display of artillery and cavalry as part of 'National Review' parade by Coln Jno Ewell cost $4oo.....This route has been followed each day since then by Genl Wm Halleck's army.........In 1863 Unionists burned down Old Courthouse building used by Captn Fitzhugh Lee before brigade marched into town square to celebrate surrender......................................................Today there are few reminders that events took place here more than 100 years ago.............................................................................

The Battle of Manassas took place on April 12, 1861, during the American Civil War. Union General Robert E. Lee's infantry and cavalry unit attacked Confederate General George Pickett's division of Major-General Jubal Early's army near Manassas Junction. In what has been called one of the bloodiest battles in American history, over 50 thousand soldiers were killed or wounded with an equal number dying from disease or accidents before each side emerged victorious. The battle helped spur Union public support for Lincoln's reelection campaign and set the stage for his famous Gettysburg Address. In 1871, part of Fairfax County detached to form Alexandria County which included much of present-day Manassas as well as parts of northern Arlington County and eastern Loudoun County (later Prince William County). As a result of this change in county boundaries, most residents in north-central Fairfax and east-central Prince William counties left their homes in order to become residents in Alexandria County while some remain there today. This exodus created a community nucleus around Manassas that persisted until after World War II when many veterans returned home from World War II and decided not to move back into their families' homes but instead developed new subdivisions elsewhere around town because they had more opportunity for housing than they did back home in Fairfax or Prince William Counties. Today many people who grew up here still identify with their childhood home even though it is no longer within walking distance or easy access to town center; however they are more likely than not to visit either during off seasons when local events are less active or when they have special needs that need close attention while living outside the jurisdiction of city government ordinances governing how personal property may be used (i.e., hunting/ fishing rights).
Manassas is located in Fairfax County, Virginia. It was named for General James Manassas (1781-1846), who fought in the American Civil War and was wounded at Cold Harbor. The town was laid out in 1792 by Colonel John Forbes. In 1811, it became a county seat. The population of Manassas reached 6,000 in 1840 and 10,000 by 1860. It lost its county seat status in 1865 but has continued to thrive as a small town since then.
