The first inhabitants of Martinsville were Native Americans who lived along the Potomac River before settling on land that later became part of Bartholomew Martinsville Township. It wasn't until 1777 that Englishman Bartholomew Martins established a small farmstead on what would become known as Martin's Island just downstream from today's intersection of Utopia Road (Route 231) and Potterstown Pike (Route 236). From his farmstead, Martinsville grew slowly but steadily throughout much of its early years due to its location upstream from other settlements on both sides of the Potomac River. In 1800, when Bartholomew Martinsville was founded there were only seventy-five residents living in what would soon be called Bartholomewtownsend Township proper with a population size estimated at 1 500 individuals according to records kept by local government officials. Within five years however, this number had increased greatly due to increased agricultural production thanks to improvements brought about by new technology such as irrigation systems and canals during this time period. Martinsville is an unincorporated community in Chatham County, Virginia. It was founded by George Martin in 1824 as a trading post on the James River. In 1832, Martin built the first brick courthouse in Virginia and served as its first justice of the peace. By 1840, Martinsville had over 1,000 residents and prospered thanks to its role as a transportation hub and trade center. However, during the American Civil War, Martinsville saw heavy fighting and lost many residents to Confederate forces. After the war, it slowly declined until its closure in 1971. today there are only a few small businesses remaining in Martinsville and most of its former residents have since moved away. Despite its humble beginnings, Martinsville has long been a significant presence in Virginian history: it was birthplace of George Washington; home to both Mount Vernon (the President's estate) and West Point (the Army's headquarters); birthplace of Vice President John Cranch; among other noteworthy people. In addition to its historical significance, Martinsville is also known for its agricultural products: tobacco is one of the town's main industries; apples are another important crop; and potatoes are also grown hereabouts.
