Newport News, Virginia is a town located in the southeastern United States. The population was 14,853 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Prince George's County and home to Northern Virginia Tech University. The first permanent European settlers in Newport News were Englishmen who arrived in 1607. They named their new settlement after Christopher Newport, an Englishman who had sailed from England on a voyage to India in 1592. By 1724, the town had increased its population to 100 people and was known as "Newport News Plantation." In 1727-1728, King George II of Great Britain grantedations for two townships (later renamed Prince George's County) in what are now eastern Fairfax County and southern Anne Arundel County; both townships were adjacent to Newport News. In 1785, King James II of England granted another land grant for the town of Newport News; this grant included land that forms today's eastern part of PrinceGeorge's County. In 1801, John Randolph Churchill became Governor of Virginia and moved his family from Norfolk to Hampton Roads because he believed that living near Richmond would be too difficult for them when he ran for office there. He also served as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention from Virginia in 1804 and 1808. On July 7, 1861, duringthe American Civil War, Captain John Cushing led a detachment of Confederate soldiers into Lexington Court House where they unsuccessfully attempted to surrender their cannons to General Robert E Lee before withdrawing back out onto Lexington Pike withoutHarding them or taking any prisoners After the war ended on April 9th 1865 by Union troops overwhelming Confederate forces under General Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House Lieutenant Colonel John Cushing surrendered all but one cannonballs from his unit which formed part of XI Corps artillery under General Beauregard
