Newport News is a city in the Commonwealth of Virginia, United States. The population was 718 at the 2010 census. Newport News is located on the Elizabeth River, just upstream from Hampton Roads, which forms the eastern border of Newport News proper. The city's namesake and first permanent settler was Peter Jefferson who founded what would become known as Newport News in 1746. The town grew quickly during the early 1800s as cotton plantations were established in adjacent areas of present-day Norfolk and Portsmouth. In 1802, Richard Bland bought 10 acres (40 hectares) of land east ofpresent-day Newport News for $2 per acre (1/4 hectare). On February 4, 1804, Bland donated this land to the Methodist Episcopal Church for use as a parish churchyard and cemetery. In 1881, James Buchanan Moncrief donated two tracts of land totaling 8 miles (12 km) south of present-day Newport News to be used as an agricultural experimental station called "Moncrief Station". This rural research station became one of America's premier agriculture experiments during World War I due to its location near Richmond and Peninsula Naval Air Station; it housed up to 60 buildings including a windmill and dairy barn that remain extant today. The war resulted in significant damage to Moncrief Station which was abandoned after hostilities ended; however, over time it has been restored and now houses several museums within walking distance of its original structures. In 1924–25 local businessmen Harry Fenton Hooker and Wm Southeastern Construction Company developed what would become downtown Newport News; at first it consisted only of a few blocks along Main Street between King Street and Government Row. Today downtown is home to more than 100 businesses with multiple levels supporting retail storefronts covering nearly 2 acres (100 hectares). On July 1st, 1984 – following yearslong planning - Newport News became an independent city with its own government under Mayor George Ellington Jr.. The City Council currently includes 12 members sworn into office each month - 5 residents elected at-large while 3 councilmembers are appointed by mayor subject to mayoral approval - making it one of America's most democratically governed cities!

In 1839, John Browning designed his first bolt-action rifle, which became one of the most popular guns in history. The popularity of rifles such as these led to their widespread use during the American Revolution and World War I, as well as many other conflicts throughout history.
Newport News was founded in 1784 by Captain John Smith and his wife, Katherine. The city was named for the English port of Newport on the James River, which was then a colony of Virginia. After the American Revolution ended in 1789, the British authorities revoked British citizenship to many Virginians and confiscated their property. This led to a large population shift from London to Newport News in an attempt to rebuild their fortunes. The early years of Newport News were difficult because it was surrounded by hostile Indian Territory. But with hard work and determination, the town emerged as one of the most successful textile towns in America. In 1812, Christopher Columbus discovered new land off the coast of Virginia and called it America; this event helped spur development in Newport News. The harbor became one of America's busiest trade ports and manufacturing centers grew rapidly due to technological advances such as steamboats and railroadroads. In World War II, many workers from nearby Norfolk came to help build airplanes at various plants on Long Island Sound. When war began, Plant P-47s (the "Flying Fortresses") were built at Willow Grove Air Force Base near Philadelphia using parts procured from Newport News factories. These planes played a major role in victory over Japan during World War II and are still being used today! Today, Newport News is known for its naval shipyards where warships are built including nuclear vessels and submarines; its biomedical research center; its popular tourist attractions such as Farragut Square shopping district and Broadwalk Park; and its diverse cultural experiences - from live music events to classical concerts."
