Newport News is a town in the Commonwealth of Virginia, United States. The population was 29,041 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest incorporated city in Virginia and one of the fastest-growing cities in America. Newport News is located on the James River east of Petersburg and north of Norfolk. The first permanent English settlement in what is now Newport News was established by Captain John Smith on November 3, 1607 as part of a scouting expedition directed by James I of England. At that time there were 11 settlements within Fairfax County: Newington Manor on Roanoke Island; Middleton Manor near present-day Portsmouth; Williamsburg; Alexandria; Lacey’s Point on Northampton Sound; Warwick Plantation on Princess Anne’s Creek; Fair Oaks Estate near Chantilly ; Hermitage Estate northwest of Quantico ; and White Oak Swamp across from modern-day Hampton Roads. A local ferry service called Gloucester Ferry connected Newport News to Portsmouth until 1915 when Old Dominion Railway built a bridge over Hampton Roads making it possible to drive into town from outside without having to take a ferry. In 1894, General John J. Pershing took command of First Corps stationed at Fort Monroe then moved southward towards Richmond where he ordered artillery batteries placed along both banks of York River so that he could bombard Confederate positions during their retreat from Petersburg Peninsula. This action destroyed many Confederate cannons which helped end Rebel control over much of southern Virginia beforeAdditional cannon batteries were later erected at Forts Stevensburg and Donelson securing Richmond against any future Confederate attacks."
