At this time, many local Native Americans lived hereabouts and trade goods were common between them and Europeans. One of the most important events that occurred during the early years of Radford's growth was its incorporation as a town on November 1, 1852 by James Waddell. This event marked an important milestone for the town because it made it possible for residents to do business with each other without having to go through Philadelphia or Lynchburghardt (now Manassas). Today, many residents still refer to themselves as "radfords" due to this unique identifier. During World War II, much effort went into developing munitions production at nearby Dumont Arsenal which led to increased demand for labor withinRadford itself and nearby towns such as Winchester and Fairfax County. Additionally, many residents served in Armed Forces during World War II including Air Force pilots who patrolled radars over Loudoun County; Navy sailors who operated submarines off Virginia Beach; Army soldiers who fought at Anzio Ridge; and Atomic Scientists who worked on research projects at Oak Ridge National Laboratory near Charlottesville

Radford, Virginia is a town in Radford County, Virginia, United States. The population was 10,527 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlottesville metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1800 as a small frontier settlement by George Washington and his family. It became an important cultural and educational center during the antebellum period and came to be known for its architecture and Colleges of William & Mary (now Williamsburg), Radcliffe College (now Harvard University), and Randolph-Macon College. In 1814, President James K. Polk named it in honor of General John Armstrong "Old Hickory" Jackson who had fought against Native Americans in the Creek War. In 1861, Union forces under General Robert E. Lee attacked Radford while Confederate forces fought back from shelters inside the town walls; this led to the Battle of Radford Bridge which ended with Union victory. The loss of this strategic bridge destroyed Confederate morale and allowed Union troops to advance further into Virginia without resistance or opposition. Today, parts of Radford are still visited by tourists because of this battle site history.

Today, Radford is a vibrant community with a rich history that continues to make positive contributions to its residents and surrounding communities
