Radford is a town in west Virginia, United States. The population was 5,521 at the 2010 census. Radford is part of the Roanoke Rapids–Lynchburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is located on the Lynchburg River, about east of Lynchburg and west of Roanoke. The first man to live in Radford was James Harper who settled there in 1781. In 1827, John Denny founded the first store in Radford when he opened a general store on High Street. Over time other stores were established and by 1870, the town had six stores and twenty-four residents. By 1907, the population had grown to over two thousand people with ninety businesses operating within its boundaries. In 1930, Radford became an incorporated city with mayoralty and a council-manager form of government which it retains to this day. In 1942 Radford became one of five towns in West Virginia that joined forces withRoanoke to become "Radcliffe Borough". On July 1st of that year all but one business within town closed due to wartime shortages in goods; however most businesses re-opened after enough munitions arrived from outside the country throughOperation Crossroads II%. A large parade was held on October 15th which included marching bands from all over America as well as local children's choir "The White Sands" performing patriotic songs downtown before fireworks exploded overhead creating an amazing show for onlookers! On November 3rd 1944 President Franklin D Roosevelt issued Executive Order 9066 which led to mass deportations of virtually all Japanese Americans living within three hundred miles of US shores during World War II including many individuals who had no connection whatsoever to Japan or any military activity! Known locally as "the old garrison," Radford soon grew into a prosperous community thanks to its strategic location at the heart of two significant Patriot movements: those against British rule in America and those fighting for independence from Great Britain (the latter known as "the war for Northern rights"). As early as 1792,Radford boasted an opera house and several theaters; by 1800, it boasted three churches and over 100 homes! By 1830, however, only 10 families lived in what is now Radford proper while 1200 people worked in nearby communities like Manassas or Fairfax! By 1860s radforid had shrunken from 30k residents [+10% per annum] to 7k [+5% per annum]), reflecting declines across all levels of society due largely to enmity between native Americans & Englishmen stirred up by pro-Confederate sentiment among rural Virginians... [Radford] rapidly declined after 1861 because Confederate forces captured Richmond & relocated most Lowcountry Blacks eastward into Yankees territory... much harder work getting food rations here than out there so that 400+ men could garrison some storehouses without endangering their life or limb

In 1777, a group of George Washington's Continental Army soldiers led by Captain John Roanoke set out from Radford to cross the Potomac River. After weeks of hard travel they finally arrived at Fort Necessity on November 14. There they built their first camp and began their siege of the fort. The fort was held by British forces for several days before surrendering on November 18. The troops were then able to march back home unmolested. This event is known as the Battle of Fort Necessity.
