Radford is a small town in Virginia, United States. The population was 3,521 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Radford County. The name "radford" comes from the nearby village of Radcliffe and its surrounding countryside. The area that now makes up Radford was originally part of Fairfax County. In 1814, George Washington and his army crossed the Potomac River here to attack British forces encampment at Ford’s Bridge. After one day of fighting, Washington's troops emerged victorious and marched back upstream to White House Mill where they took dinner. The following day, they continued their journey downstream and arrived at Mount Vernon just before nightfall on July 24th. Here, President Washington met with his generals before retiring for the night to rest arrangements for the war effort in North America which had just ended two days earlier. In 1792, when James Caldwell sold 4 acres (1 hectare) of land east of present-day downtown Radford to Elias Howe he may have named it "Caldwell's Patent." However this first reference to a settlement by white Americans in what would later become Radford goes back much further - to 1777 when Robert Carter erected a small farm on land that is now known as South Hill Road nearpresent-day Union Station; he called it "Carter's Forge." Radford was founded in 1781 by Dr. George Washington and his wife, Martha Washington. The town was named for the Asheville Mountains in North Carolina. Gordon Liddy, served from 1969 until his retirement in 2001. President Liddy’s successor, Jane Lynch, announced in December 2002 that she would retire at the end of her four-year term on January 1st 2003 and be succeeded by her Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Pamela Kraybill. On November 10th 2007, it was announced that Dr."Pamela Kraybill" would not be continuing as President effective January 1st 2009 due to health reasons
