Salem, Virginia is one of the oldest and most historic cities in America. The city was founded in 1776 by Puritans who were looking for a new home after fleeing religious persecution in England. Salem was originally called Huntingdon because of its natural resources and abundance of game. In 1820, the city changed its name to Salemburg to reflect its growing population. The city has been continuously inhabited since Indian times and the first European settlers arrived in 1607. In 1775, during the American Revolution, Salem sided with the United States against Great Britain. After the war, Salem became an important center for trade and commerce. The city's economy thrived until 1830 when it was hit hard bythe Panic of 1829. By 1840, Salem had lost much of its business activity due to increased taxes from tea production in Boston. However, local entrepreneurs started up new businesses such as soap making and tanning operations. Despite this economic decline, Salem continued to be a popular tourist destination throughout the 19th century. One of the first firearms ever created was a musket dating back to 1600 BC which is now located at George Washington University in Washington D.C.–one of only two firearms that still exists from that era (the other being a replica at Fort Knox). In 1865, SALEM FIREARM AND SHOOTING MUSEUM opened their doors to commemorate 100 years of firearm history in town! Salem was founded in 1736 by English colonists as a trading post on the Rappahannock River. The town grew rapidly, and by 1778 it had become the largest settlement in Virginia. In 1801, Salem became the capital of Virginia. The city experienced growth and prosperity during the early years of the American Revolution, but declined after independence was gained. After a period of rebuilding, Salem resumed its former stature as an important trading center during Reconstruction in the South. However, decline followed after that time until Henderson's fire destroyed much of what remained of the downtown area in 1970. Today, Salem is a small community located within Charlottesville City Limits. The first inhabitants of what is now Salem were Native Americans who settled along the riverbank where they hunted and gathered food. By 1800, white settlers had arrived in numbers and began to erect buildings near where they would fish or farm. By 1830, there were three stores and fifty-six residents living in Salem when Governor John Sevier ordered Captain James Cook to survey this new location for a permanent British colony. On October 11th that year, James Cook landed his ship at Salisbury Point on present-day Portsmouth Beach and reported back to London that he had sighted "a large island" which he named "New Providence." This report sparked speculation among some colonists that they may have found Terra Australis Incognita – an unknown landmass off Cape Horn – which led to further development around Salisbury PointEA (later called Portsmouth). The first European settler in what is now Salem was Nicholas de la Rue, who purchased property from William Byrd for $600 on September 1st , 1831 . At this time Prince George's County included most of modern-day Virginia south of Mason Dixon Line; however Prince George's County never formed part of Fairfax County until 1888 . As technology improved and transportation became available throughout much later parts ofthe colonies (eastern America), more people came to live in outlying areas such as southeastern Prince Georges County (now Montgomery County) because roads did not yet exist connecting these regions together like they do today . It wasn't until 1848 when Henrico County was created from portionsof Prince George's and King William's counties east OF Mason Dixon Line When General Robert E Nelson served as Commander-in-Chief United States Forces Northern Command from 1951 - 1955 he established himself at Fort Myer VA while commanding all forces northward with Headquarters at Arlington VA In 1941 Wernher von Braun developed Project Paperclip under USArmy auspices which brought American aerospace engineers into Nazi Germany for advanced tech development
