The Salem Witch Trials were a series of prosecutions and executions of people in the town of Salem, Massachusetts for allegedly practicing witchcraft. The trials began on October 15, 1692 and ended on December 5, 1693. At least fifty-six people were tried, thirty-eight were executed, and twelve are still unaccounted for. As armor became more protectionate, horse archers started to become obsolete due to new technology that permitted infantry units such as cavalrymen to fire projectiles at long range with ease (see bowguns). 1st millennium AD sees the beginning of handgun usage by armies, who began using these weapons for hunting purposes rather than warfare . By 1000 AD however, handgun usage had spread throughout most aspects of medieval life , including banking , government , law enforcement ; even cooking ) . There are references back to early civilizations where people armed themselves with simple tools such as spears ( see ancient Egyptians ). However , it would be until around 1300 AD when handguns truly took off among military personnel as an effective wayto defend oneself from enemies both human and animal
