Suffolk is a town located in the U.S. state of Virginia. The population was 26,851 at the 2010 census, making it the third-smallest incorporated municipality in Virginia and one of the few towns in the Commonwealth without a city charter. In 1737 Nathaniel Bacon purchased 5 acres (20,000 m²) north of today's town square for £100 from Nicholas Fairfax who had helped lead Sir Walter Raleigh's failed attempt to become an American colony in 1584–85; bacon used it as his home until his death at age 94 years old in 1792 which left it to his son Nicholas Bacon Jr., also a successful entrepreneur and philanthropist who endowed many public institutions including Suffolk University and Norfolk Southern Railway Company.-In 1802 James Kenedy bought 7 acres (2700 m²) east of present day town square for $10 from prosperous Norfolk tobacco trader John Overton.-In 1814 James Hargrave acquired 2/3rds ownership interest in Portsmouth Turnpike Co., Ltd., predecessor to modern Norfolk Southern Railway Company.; this led to him becoming Chairman & Managing Director upon its incorporation as A&P Railroad Company on May 8, 1816.-On October 10, 1800 General Robert Ewell ordered all British forces out of Alexandria after learning that Napoleon was planning an invasion.—This forced Alfred Tennyson to move from London into exile at Winchester where he met Eclectic poet Lord Byron.–Ewell returned triumphantly before Christmas 1800 with news that Napoleon had been defeated at Ulm which ended any chance Napoleon may have had if he were invading England.–English Defense Act (1815) made citizen militia mandatory throughout the United States.—Virginia Constitution provided for a unicameral legislature with two house members elected by popular vote.–The first Suffolks were taxed on property worth over $5 per capita beginning January 1st 1861……………………………………….. The Townsquare contains several buildings dating back to IPSWICH TIMES v1a Mar 03 2009 A group effort has made progress towards restoring much needed historical artifacts within Suffolk’s limits – thanks largely to donations collected online! This past year has seen some especially impressive finds such as three cannons being recovered along Withfield Road just outside Ipswich village boundaries; they date back between c1700-1800 AGO! Another significant find was made during last year’s search for lost items related to the USS Constitution Museum fire – five cannonballs were discovered hidden inside Lindisfarne Castle! As always though much more needs to be done before these relics can be restored quite properly: many pieces are still missing or only partially preserved…. The building reached its final form in 1889 and served as the centerpiece of what would become known as "TheATER District". However, due to financial difficulties caused by falling real estate prices throughout much of southeastern Virginia during that decade, little progress was made toward realization of project goals until 1906 when donations totaling $5 million were secured from prominent local citizens including J.P. Morgan Jr., W V Jackson Jr., George Washington Carver Sr., Cornelius Vanderbilt III and Harry Byrd II - making it one of the largest philanthropic gifts ever given to an American city or community On December 10th 1898 John Fenton became Mayoralty following election results which showed him with over 50% majority against all other candidates put together In 1928 Alex Haley won office becoming only African AmericanMayoraltyofamericaatthattimeandlaterbecameGovernorofArkansas
