By 1800, there were only 10 villages remaining around Long Island Sound excepting Shelter Harbor on Staten Island which had merged with New York City in 1898 (Latham v.-New York [1899]). Many early colonists who settled in eastern Long Island Sound came from England specifically via Rhode Island where large numbers had landed during Queen Anne's war with France (1702-13). Many Irish immigrants also arrived during this time frame after being transported through “the Great Famine” caused by successive English harvests failures (1715-1721)…. Aftermaths such as these led some British colonists—many descended from those original English settlers—to look for alternative routes out west rather than risk another round of famine or persecution at home should their search prove fruitless…. By 1800 only 10%–20%of all preindustrial residents lived within 200 miles (322 km)of major commercial centers like Boston or New York City…..
