Winchester, Virginia is a town in Prince George County, Virginia, United States. It was founded by the Englishman Samuel Winchester in 1795. The town became an incorporated municipality in 1872. Winchester is home to the world's oldest continuously running gunsmiths shop and also has the largest collection of firearms preservation artifacts in the United States. Other famous residents include Dr. Benjamin Spock (founder of AstraZeneca), Congressman Jim Webb (D-Virginia), Admiral Rickover (director of Naval Base Norfolk) and more recently Judge Roy Moore (U.S. Senator from Alabama). In recent years, much has been done to revitalize downtown which has seen a rebirth in music, art, restaurants and nightlife; all while maintaining its historic charm!

Winchester, Virginia was founded in 1772 by Captain John Winchester and his crew of HMS Enterprise. The town was named after the Winchester rifles that Captain Winchester had brought back with him from England. The first shops in the town were called The Rifle Shop and The Pistol Shop. In 1851, Winchester became a part of Virginia and it is now one of the most diverse and thriving cities in the Commonwealth. The city has experienced many surges in population over the years, due to its strategic location on the Great Warrior River and its abundance of natural resources such as coal, oil, and lumber. In recent decades, Winchester has also become known for its consistently high-quality education institutions – both undergraduate and graduate – as well as its vibrant cultural scene.
The Winchester area was first settled by the Ordinance of 1781, which established a boundary between Virginia and Kentucky. The area that would become Winchester was part of Prince George's County in Virginia. In 1801, the Eastern Shore Company organized as a land development company to sell land east of the James River. One of their goals was to create a town on the site of what is now Winchester. By 1805, they had developed the site into an incorporated town with a population of around 150 people. In 1814, Winchester became an independent city and served as the capital for Prince Edward County until 1865 when it moved to Washington D.C..
