Winchester, Virginia is one of the oldest towns in the United States. Winchester was founded by George Washington in 1775 and became a federal town in 1871. Winchester has been a center of production of ammunition for firearms since the days of powder and shot. Ammunition production began at Winchester on July 16, 1792, when David Thompson and Adam Black manufactured their first shot cartridge, the .577 caliber British round. The first commercial shotgun sale took place in Winchester on December 3, 1827. A year later, Major John Browning established his rifle company in Winchester to produce rifles based on his design for the smoothbore breechloading handgun called the lever-action rifle. In 1873, Benjamin Butler developed an improved version of this weapon that became known as the Butler Limited Rifle. At this time, Winchester also produced shotguns under license from other manufacturers including Remington Arms Corporation and Smith & Wesson Firearms Company. Winchester is a town in Hampshire County, Virginia, United States. The population was 9,912 at the 2010 census. Winchester is the county seat of Hampshire County. It lies on the Shenandoah River and east of Charlottesville. The first permanent European settlers in what is now Winchester were Frenchmen who named it "Château-du-Roc" (later known as Châtelperron). The area that became Winchester was part of Fauquier County until 1751 when it became part of Botetourt Parish. In 1802, Parker's Purchase land within present-day Hampshire County was acquired from James Robertson by Major General Daniel Boone, who named it for himself and his friend Colonel John Winchester. At this time, both Fauquier and Botetourt Counties were divided into three districts: Upper Richmond District formed from parts of Fauquier and Botetourt Counties; Lower Richmond District from parts of Hanover and Fairfax Counties; and Middleton District from part of Fairfax County. In 1861, the Townships of Ashburnham and Staunton were established within present day Hampshire County through an act passed by the Virginia General Assembly; these townships had been created less than one year earlier by an act which combined portions of neighboring towns Hopewell Township (now Appomattox Court House) with Newington Township to form what is now Southampton Borough. In 1871, much to the chagrin of many residents in Southampton Borough who felt they had been left out in the legislature's action, Winchester townhood status was granted to Ashburnham township. In 1865–66 Hampton Roads & Yorktown Railroad construction began westward from Portsmouth towards Blacksburg over what are now Bureau Hill Road (Upper Arlington Boulevard), Church Street (now I-270), Pee Dee Road (now US 267), Loudoun Avenue (now US 1), White Oak Drive (now US 460) and Scranton Avenue/Route 234 Alternate/Old Dominion Parkway across what are now Old Dominion Parkland south to where Interstate 66 meets Interstate 95 near Warrenton Junction; at this time there were only two roads crossed: Old Dominion Parkway northward to where I-95 intersects Interstate 66 southward then east along I-66 back into Hampton Roads; later this road became I-495 as well as VA Route 234 Alternate between Petersburg Junction and Warrenton Junction becoming a tollroad known as 'the Beltway' today). Iver Johnson & Son built a sawmill on future College Pointe Dam site northeast of present day Winchester in 1851 which powered Plants No 2 & 3 until 1915 when those plants closed due to economic decline but left behind a millstream called "Winchester Mill Stream". With plans for development on that site postponed numerous times because water levels changed too much over time or because other mills ground more wood than needed during those years power went out leaving many homes without heat or light during winter while lumber yards continued operations utilizing generators since most people could not afford electricity anyway!

However, over time it grew to become one of the most influential communities in Virginia due to its location on the Potomac River and its strategic position as a crossroads for trade and transportation. In 1868, Winchester became an incorporated city and has continued to grow in popularity ever since. Today, Winchester is known for its elegant architecture and rich history. The origins of Winchester are shrouded in mystery. Some believe that it may have been founded by Native Americans as early as 12,000 years ago. Regardless, by 1792 Washington had determined that he would move his family from Boston to start a new life in what he called "the beautiful country between the rivers." The move proved successful and within three years they had moved to what is now Winchester. In 1802 Congress passed the act granting independence to Virginia which made Winchester an official county seat of Prince William County. The following year President Thomas Jefferson visited the area and upon his return recommended that Alexandria be chosen instead because it had more important governmental functions than Winchester at this time (Alexandria would eventually become the capital of Virginia). 1 2 incidentally however, while visiting Alexandria Jefferson also purchased property adjacent to what is now Fourth Street NW., near modern-day Arlington Cemetery where he built his home (now known as Monticello).
